Michael “Bo” Yates is a native of Ocala, Fla., who developed his passion for Thoroughbred racing at an early age. Growing up on his family’s Ocala farm, he was leading mares and foals by the age of 7, according to a blog written by his daughter Micayla, and galloping horses in high school.
After starting out as an assistant, Yates took out his trainer’s license in 1991 and has enjoyed success with multiple stakes winners such as Poppy’s Pride, Dorth Vader, and Dean Delivers.

Yates earned his first career stakes win with Tripski in the Eillo Stakes Sept. 1, 2012, at Calder Race Course. His first graded stakes win came when Dorth Vader posted a 46.70-1 upset in the 2023 Davona Dale Stakes Presented by FanDuel TV and later finished fifth in the Longines Kentucky Oaks and second in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes Presented by Great Jones Distilling Co.
In 2024, Fiona’s Magic gave Yates his second consecutive win in the Davona Dale Stakes and his second starter in the Kentucky Oaks.
