For the fourth year in a row more than 200 pre-entries have been accepted for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

Connections of top Thoroughbreds from around the globe have declared their intention to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Del Mar, with 207 pre-entries recorded this week for the international festival of racing. That number is down slightly from the 212 entered last year, also at Del Mar.

The 42nd annual Breeders’ Cup World Championships is set for Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Del Mar in Southern California.

The main event is less than two weeks away! A stellar field is set to start in the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic Nov. 1 at Del Mar, and if the current list of contenders ends up meeting in the 1 ¼-mile test with no late defections, it should be one of the most competitive editions of the Classic in the event’s history.

The Grade 1 American Grand National Hurdle Stakes was the main event on Oct. 18 at Far Hills, where the day of racing in New Jersey was dominated by horses and humans from Ireland.

Del Mar had long been considered one of horse racing’s most treasured venues, but like Keeneland Race Course its seasonal boutique meets did not seem to be an ideal fit for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. That all changed with an announcement by Breeders’ Cup officials on June 24, 2014.
