Sol Kumin has experienced the thrill of owning a share of a Triple Crown winner thanks to Justify and been a part of dozens of celebrations after Grade 1 victories.

Yet, while watching a May 16 one-mile allowance-optional claiming race, he felt the same tingle he gets when one of his horses competes in one the sport’s richest and most well-known races.

Thoroughbred racing in New York took one step closer May 16 toward resuming — and it was a big one.

During his live address to the state Saturday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced racetracks will be permitted to resume racing without fans effective June 1. His office will be issuing guidance in the coming week as to how tracks can operate safely as the COVID-19 crisis continues.

Churchill Downs has released a preliminary list of races that could be used for the extension of the Road to the Kentucky Derby, pending agreeable race placement by the host tracks.

Normally, the horse racing world would be enjoying one of the most exciting weeks of the year, as horses arrive at Pimlico in Baltimore and take their last gallops in preparation for the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of racing’s Triple Crown, on Saturday. But nothing about this spring is normal.
