Of the three Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series races last weekend at Woodbine, trainer Mark Casse won two of them: the Grade 1 Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes with And One More Time and the Grade 1 Rogers Woodbine Mile Stakes

The California Crown is horse racing’s newest headline day of racing and wagering set to take place Saturday, Sept. 28 at Santa Anita Park. The inaugural event is positioned to be a lifestyle celebration on the social calendar centered around a day at the races.

The fields for the 14 races that comprise the Breeders’ Cup World Championships really begin to come into focus in summer and fall. This regular feature will offer a snapshot profile of one of the previous weekend’s standout stars, usually a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series winner, and whether I’m buying or selling their chances to win Nov. 1-2 at Del Mar.

Rarely do top-class racemares duplicate their efforts from the racetrack as broodmares. The odds are simply stacked against such a feat. It has been done, though, and if one were to rank mares who were the best in both careers, Miesque would undoubtedly be near the top of that list. She won 10 Grade or Group 1 races, including two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and her first two foals were classic winners.

There is so much behind the name of Arthur’s Ride, who looms as a contender when the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic is run Nov. 2 at Del Mar.
