It was two years ago when trainer Shug McGaughey followed Florida's Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve to a second-place finish with Code of Honor in the Run for the Roses.

On Jan. 30, Gulfstream Park in Florida will host the $200,000 Holy Bull Stakes, a major prep race on the road to the Kentucky Derby. It’s only fitting that the Holy Bull should be a race of such significance, for Holy Bull was undoubtedly one of the most brilliant horses we have seen in the last 30 years.

Activity resumes Saturday on California’s Road to the Kentucky Derby and — surprise, surprise — trainer Bob Baffert is at the center of it.

The coronavirus pandemic impacted just about everything in 2020, including sports across the globe. Thoroughbred racing was certainly impacted, but by May racetracks started reopening with limited or no fans allowed and the horses and those who care for them got back to business.

Gulfstream Park has long been a key racetrack on the road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, and in recent years three of the last eight Kentucky Derby winners made at least one start at the Hallandale Beach, Fla. track on the Derby trail.
