The field for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic begins to take shape in early summer after the Triple Crown races conclude. Over the July 4 holiday weekend, the $6 million race picked up a new prime player coming out of the Grade 2 Suburban Stakes at Belmont Park.

There’s a well-known expression about something looking like a “million bucks.”

Slowly but surely, First Captain is looking more and more like the $1.5 million bucks his ownership group paid for him in 2019 as the co-sale topper at the Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton’s New York sale of selected yearlings.

When the field loaded into the starting gate for the Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park on July 10, 2010, all eyes were on the 1-5 favorite. Jerry Hollendorfer-trained Blind Luck was a firmly established superstar by that point, having won five graded stakes races including the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.

The only Grade 1 winner in an eight-horse field for the $350,000 Grade 2 Princess Rooney Invitational Stakes July 3 at Gulfstream Park, Bo Hirsch's homebred Ce Ce returned to the form that saw her win twice at the highest level last year.

Graded stakes at a distance of 1 1/4 miles or more are on dirt are rare, but they do play an important role in preparing horses for some of the sport’s most important races.
