Californians Eric and Sharon Waller entered horse racing as owners and breeders during the mid-1990s when they acquired some horses from Sharon’s brother, a retired jockey battling cancer. The Wallers, who own Rancho Santa Fe near Del Mar, kept their operation small, focusing on homebreds, and began to reap the rewards during the 2000s and 2010s, winning their first graded stakes in 2017 with Spectator.
In 2024, Stronghold, a Ghostzapper colt out of Spectator, won the Sunland Park Derby and Santa Anita Derby to qualify for the 150th Kentucky Derby.
