Michael Trombetta trained his first winner in 1986 after his father owned horses when Trombetta was a teenager. He became a player on the national racing scene in 2006 when his trainee Sweetnorthernsaint went off as the favorite in the Kentucky Derby after winning the Illinois Derby. The colt would go on to finish second in the Preakness Stakes.
