Lord Miles

Lord Miles made a nice first impression when winning his career debut by 5 ¾ lengths Nov. 19, 2022, at Gulfstream Park. The bay colt by Curlin followed with a game third-place finish in the one-mile Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park on New Year’s Day 2023.

Lord Miles made his next start on the road to the 2023 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, and finished sixth after a poor start in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes Feb. 4 at Gulfstream. He followed with a fifth-place finish in the Grade 3 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby on March 11.

The big breakout race for Lord Miles came in his final Kentucky Derby prep race in the Grade 1 $750,000 Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct on April 8. Sent off as a 59-1 longshot on the tote board in a field of 12, Lord Miles stalked the pace up close throughout, fought hard through the stretch, and gamely prevailed on the outside in a three-way photo finish along with favored Hit Show and Dreamlike to win by a nose in a time of 1:51.17. The Wood Memorial was a maximum points race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby and the win was worth 100 points to Lord Miles. After shipping to Louisville for the 149^th Derby, Lord Miles was withdrawn from the race two days before on May 4 by order of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

Lord Miles is trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. He was bred in Kentucky by the sire Curlin and produced by the unraced Majestic Warrior mare Lady Esme, a half-sister to 2017 champion 2-year-old filly Caledonia Road.
