Where to Watch/Listen: Horse Racing Coverage for Sept. 15-20

Events / Travel
Woodbine racetrack in Toronto will host three Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” races this weekend. (Eclipse Sportswire)

The horse racing world like all other areas of society continues to make changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and public health crisis. Most racetracks currently operating are doing so without spectators, and have instituted strict safety screening protocols for essential employees who are already on the grounds to provide daily care for horses. Charities are ramping up services to help track workers during these hard times, including the Race Track Chaplaincy, New York Division, while many other organizations including the Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation are redirecting resources to support medical efforts to combat the spread of the virus and support backstretch workers. (All proceeds from the Old Smoke T-shirt on sale below will go to the TJC Safety Net Foundation.)

The upcoming week is highlighted by three Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” races, all of them at Woodbine. On Saturday, the Ricoh Woodbine Mile is a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Presented by PDJF. And on Sunday, the Summer Stakes and the Natalma Stakes at Woodbine are qualifying preps for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, respectively.

All three races at Woodbine will be broadcast live on NBCSN as part of their Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” TV schedule – see the schedule below for air times. The draw for the Woodbine Mile, held at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Sept. 16, will be shown live on Woodbine's Facebook Live channel along with a discussion panel about industry issues. The Stronger Together panel will be hosted by Jason Portuondo and feature trainers Mark Casse and Kevin Attard, and Woodbine Entertainment CEO Jim Lawson. Panelists will discuss how the Thoroughbred racing industry has managed the COVID-19 pandemic, how it is positioned for the future coming out of the pandemic, and innovation in the sport and industry.

TVG also provides comprehensive coverage of Woodbine racing throughout the week and will also televise live racing from the final two days of Kentucky Downs’ boutique turf-only meet on Tuesday and Wednesday. The opening of Santa Anita Park's fall meet, originally scheduled for this upcoming weekend and covered by TVG, has been postponed to Sept. 25.

Racing from Churchill Downs and Belmont Park will be showcased on “America’s Day at the Races,” starting on Churchill’s opening day on Thursday, Sept. 17. The NYRA-produced show will add Belmont to its slate when that track kicks off its fall meet on Friday, and run through Sunday on either FS1 or FS2. Check the schedule below for air times. The shows will also air on MSG+ and on regional Fox outlets Prime Ticket and Fox Sports San Diego – check NYRA’s website for those dates and times.

On Friday Sept. 18, ABR presents a special edition of "Woodbine Live" focusing on the Woodbine Mile. The show begins at 4:30 p.m. ET and is hosted by ABR’s Dan Tordjman with special guests. It is streamed on ABR’s Facebook Live, Twitter, and YouTube channels.

On Saturday Sept. 19, ABR presents a “Breeders’ Cup Live” show focusing on Woodbine, beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET.
