Churchill Downs unveiled Nov. 22 the 2022 “Official Art of the Kentucky Derby,” by Kentucky artist Aimee Griffith. This marks the sixth year in a row that Churchill Downs tapped a Kentucky artist for the honor.
For the first time, Breeders’ Cup Ltd., America’s Best Racing (ABR), and Hípica TV collaborated to present live coverage, entirely in Spanish, of all 14 Breeders’ Cup World Championships races. Branded as “Breeders’ Cup en Vivo,” the two Spanish Breeders’ Cup broadcasts received more than 282,000 cumulative views while streaming live on Hípica TV’s YouTube channel over the two-day event.
The catalog from the Cross Gate Gallery’s annual Sporting Art Auction (The Sporting Art Auction) on Nov. 21, 2021, is a veritable feast for my senses. This year, the auction features 192 lots that includes paintings, sculptures, and an unusual collection of cigarette card dog studies. The showstopper is the 19th Century weathervane of the Thoroughbred Lexington, complete with bullet holes piercing it.
When it comes to sports, few experiences can rival actually attending a live event. But there's something about a viewing party done right that can bring the excitement and energy into your very own living room. With the Breeders’ Cup World Championships less than a month away, sports fans should be prepared to properly celebrate the occasion.
We are in the era of the event. I'm told younger generations expect more from sports. They don't just want to watch the game, they want to consume it – and more importantly, they want to engage in it. If horse racing is to continue to modernize to suit the tastes of the Tik Tok generation, then it must be willing to go places where other sports are currently thriving. It's time to take this show on the road.
