Jewelry! Accessories! It’s the last bastion of individual expression. One of the finest traditions of horse racing is dressing up. It’s a way of adding special touches to your outfit. Rings, cuff links, necklaces, earrings, bracelets. The combinations are endless. Whether vintage or brand new, it’s all part of the tradition.

If you’re planning your summer visit to Saratoga — and why wouldn’t you — or if you’re already on the way up to, know one thing: any complete day at “The Spa” is a marathon. If you want to do it right, you’ve got to be at the track early to watch morning works, spend the afternoon at the races, win some money and then take that money out on the town for a bite and a post-race drink or two.

The grandfather had a twinkle in his eye as he smiled at the little girl in front of him. She looked at him as he drew his hands up and mimed blowing a trumpet just as the track bugler Lynn Deichert performed the call to the post. He looked at his granddaughter and said “Who wants to go see the horses?” She threw her arms up in the air (still clutching a much beloved stuffed horse) and answered emphatically “Me! Me! Me!” He laughed as he swung her into his arms and the family followed as he said “Let’s go see some horses!”

When I moved to Kentucky in 2005, I was more of a rum and beer guy than a bourbon fan, but when in Kentucky, you quickly learn to savor the nectar of the Bluegrass state. Now, it’s the only liquor I drink. I’m officially a bourbon guy, and living in Lexington, I have access to so many amazing distilleries.
