Attending the Kentucky Derby is on the bucket list of many horse racing fans. For fans of model horses, it’s Breyerfest, toy maker Breyer Animal Creations’ three-day event held annually at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. The event started 26 years ago to create an international gathering of model horse hobby fans. Popularity of the event has continued to grow, with attendance of over 10,000 this year.

Have you ever stayed up way too late handicapping the next day’s Del Mar card or skipped a family dinner because you couldn’t miss your favorite horse running at Saratoga? Every girl loves ponies, but not every girl knows how to bet on those ponies. To call Monique Vág a horse-racing enthusiast would be like calling the Kentucky Derby just another weekend in May.

When she isn’t betting on her hometown Toronto Raptors and Maple Leafs (OK, maybe against the Leafs), she’s at her second home at Woodbine Racetrack.

Vág has written for Covers since 2013, taking on the challenge of betting every single 2014 NCAA Tournament game as well as betting every college football bowl game in 2014-15.

Name: Monique Vág

Edwin C. “Eddie” Cornier remembers clearly the day that changed his entire life. He was 11 years old and his mom brought him to Aqueduct Racetrack, where she worked as a groom for Joe Aquilino.
