Bill Poole sat puzzling in his chair as he opened his Christmas present from his daughter. It was Christmas Eve and they always opened their family gifts before going to church. He carefully lifted out the plastic horses from the box and wondered “Did she buy me a horse?” His daughter Kathy Smith watched anxiously as she had been planning his present for a very long time. His oldest grandson handed him his second present which was a handmade book full of photographs of Churchill Downs.

There is something special about a “feel good” movie especially in today’s turbulent times. It’s good to see someone succeed. If the movie involves animals, then I am all in!  "Dark Horse" is a wonderful documentary that provides a fascinating story about a couple living in Wales who decided to breed a Thoroughbred. Born on a coal slagheap, the horse named Dream Alliance carried the hopes and dreams of their small syndicate from a gentlemen’s club in coal mining country to the Grand National horse race at Aintree.

The grandfather had a twinkle in his eye as he smiled at the little girl in front of him. She looked at him as he drew his hands up and mimed blowing a trumpet just as the track bugler Lynn Deichert performed the call to the post. He looked at his granddaughter and said “Who wants to go see the horses?” She threw her arms up in the air (still clutching a much beloved stuffed horse) and answered emphatically “Me! Me! Me!” He laughed as he swung her into his arms and the family followed as he said “Let’s go see some horses!”

“The Japanese horse” they all called him, though he was born right here in the United States. Kentucky, even. A son of Tapit, our country’s top sire, which makes him related to many of the top American horses – including Creator, another gray horse in the Belmont Stakes. His maternal grandsire is Sunday Silence, the 1989 U.S. Horse of the Year.

Throwing the perfect horse racing viewing party is an art; you need to have a plan in place for drinks, snacks, decorations, betting, fashion, and maybe even a few games. With that in mind, I’ve put together a few ideas in each category to help you plan the ultimate Belmont Stakes viewing party.
