Welcome to ABR’s Pigskins and Ponies column, where winners play!

Horse racing is my means to an end, and I love the sport like no other, but I admit it, like most of you on a Sunday afternoon in the fall, it’s hard to pull me away from my couch ... and NFL RedZone.

I have a wanted sign in Vegas and am feared by fantasy football mavens nationwide, but when it comes to the college game, I choose to punt.

That’s where Bob Nastanovich comes in. He craves action and loves a good underdog as well as a cheap claiming horse with a big heart.

Agatha Christie once penned, “You agree – I’m sure you agree, that beauty is the only thing worth living for.” One person who might have echoed her sentiments was Dr. Charles H. Strub, the mastermind behind the founding of Santa Anita Park.

Fifty years ago, a new TV program hit the airwaves and boldly went where no show had gone before. Since then, “Star Trek” has grown in ways its creators likely never foresaw; so far, Star Trek has engendered six TV franchises (with a new series set to launch in 2017), 13 films, and countless fan fictions ranging from books to short stories to movies.

Like any good parent, I try to limit my children’s screen time as much as I can. But when I do let them watch TV or play games on the phone or iPad, I always try to steer them toward something I can enjoy with them, like Adventure Time, for example.

When it comes to playing games on the phone or iPad, I have pushed chess on them for too long. They would both rather play something more fast-paced, more graphic, more exciting.

Whether the hottest racing action is at Saratoga Race Course or Del Mar in the summer or at Keeneland Race Course or Santa Anita Park in the fall, if you can’t get to the track be sure to make the most of a great racing weekend by host
