Alan Sherman looks at you and smiles. While he is talking with you, he doesn’t miss a single detail around him, especially about California Chrome. You don’t realize how observant he is because he is a master at multitasking. If anyone from the Sherman Racing Stables has a need, he notices it immediately. What is interesting to watch is the nonverbal communication between everyone at the barn. They are so dialed into each other that often they do not need to talk. There is a look.

The United States boasts an array of iconic racetracks that provide an idyllic setting for an afternoon of Thoroughbred racing blended with local culture and rich history. Likewise, there is no shortage of destination-type sporting venues in the U.S., where the atmosphere is as much a part of the experience as the game.

Several of these venues have a lot in common, so let’s match racing’s historic tracks with some venerable sports venues.

Horse racing is a sport where emotions run deep, especially after winning a race, so we thought we'd share the love with a slideshow from Eclipse Sportswire!

One of my best friends is getting married in March. His bachelor party – which I was in charge of planning – is this weekend… in (surprise, surprise) Las Vegas. We’ve got a couple of activities planned already and, truthfully, we’ll probably let the weekend push and pull us wherever it may.

As I sit in our Manhattan apartment on a cold January day, anticipating yet more NFL playoff games and having just watched an exciting Manchester United/Liverpool match, I hark back to the days that Thoroughbred racing was the dominant sport in the winter months.

The Super Bowl was played in early January, the baseball season was still months away, the NBA was a Sunday afternoon event (there was no racing on Sundays).  The NHL still had only interest in the “Original 6” cities and did not have a national TV contract.
