In 1970, Arthur B. Hancock III stepped out to extend his family’s already considerable influence on the Thoroughbred world in central Kentucky by assuming managing duties of Stone Farm in Paris, north of Lexington. The Hancock family was renowned for growing nearby Claiborne Farm into a leading breeding and racing entity in Kentucky through two prior generations under the guidance of Arthur B. Hancock and Arthur B. “Bull” Hancock Jr.

The vault! The word “vault” conjures up some great images. When one is at the Kentucky Derby Museum, it’s very easy to wonder, “What else is there?” The imagination can run wild for adults who were once (and still are) horse crazy. Kentucky Derby historians — most fans are in one way or another — can riff on little-known facts about now obscure horses who were once feted as the top 3-year-olds in the country on the first Saturday in May. So when I got the opportunity to visit, I dropped everything and practically galloped to the museum.

Harry Rice III is the kind of man who makes you think that it would be great to sit down and talk with him about anything for a length of time. When he looks at you with his dancing eyes and his charming smile, you are instantly put at ease. Sitting next to him is his son, Harry IV, who has inherited his father’s affability and is blessed with the charisma and drive typical of a 22-year-old college student on his way to finding his dreams.

Sometimes attending a horse race is a life-changing moment. It certainly was for Maryland school teacher Bethann Dixon. She went to the 2012 Preakness at Pimlico and noticed the gentleman playing the “Call to the Post” in the winner’s circle. Dixon is a music teacher. She went up and introduced herself to Sam Grossman, a professional track bugler from the New York circuit.

It was a typical glorious morning at Santa Anita Park in 2013. The horses were met with brilliant sunshine as they gracefully slipped onto the track for their morning workouts. There was the usual crowd at Clockers’ Corner and a line of photographers on the rail hoping to catch a perfect “morning sunlight” shot as the horses went by.
