One of the success stories in Thoroughbred racing over the past decade is located square on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line, surrounded by farmland, with the relentless bustle of I-65 within eyesight and earshot.

WinStar Farm has been one of the preeminent multi-service Thoroughbred operations in the world over the past 15-plus years, and the Versailles, Ky.-based farm is currently in the midst of a four-year run of success that shows no signs of abating.

When it comes to wine, there are two general rules for pairing vino with the main dish. Red wines go with red meat, and white wines with fish.

Occasionally, you’ll see a rich Chardonnay nicely match the succulent juices of tender beef or bison filet, and I often pair light to medium red wines — Pinot Noir, especially — with salmon. And, who can say no to a good California Cabernet Sauvignon with a crispy fried fish?

Mick Cronin, coach of the University of Cincinnati men's basketball team, grew up tagging along with his dad, Hep, to River Downs racetrack during the summer months. Hep Cronin was a Renaissance Man, juggling roles as one of the winningest high school basketball coaches of his era in Cincinnati and also serving as a teacher, a baseball scout for the Atlanta Braves and in various roles at River Downs.

A horseshoe worn by 1973 Triple Crown winner and legendary Thoroughbred Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby sold for $80,736 in an auction conducted by Lelands.com on Aug. 16.

The price is a world record for a horseshoe, more than doubling the prior mark of $37,000, according to Lelands.com president Mike Heffner.
