The night before the 1945 Kentucky Derby, the city of Louisville was packed with racing fans. They booked every hotel room in the city, where people were crowded in three or four to a room. They filled the parking lots with cars with out-of-state plates. The biggest club in town, Club Madrid, was sold out with a capacity crowd of more than 1,400 people to hear an orchestra flown in from the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. Restaurants around town ran out of food.

You can be sure no racing fan will ever say, “If you’ve seen one track, you’ve seen ‘em all.” Layouts, food, events and even style all differ from one to another. If you’re visiting Fair Grounds for the first time, this list will help you feel like a local. If you’ve been there before, read it anyway, you just might find something new. How do I love the Fair Grounds? Let me count the ways.

When The Jockey Club launched the Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P) and committed $100,000 to its development in 2012, it’s unlikely anyone expected it to become as popular as it has.

Seven years on, the program has seen major growth in its numbers both in what it offers to riders and in terms of how many people are taking part. The program had 150 shows give out TIP awards in 2012 and over 1,300 are scheduled to give out the awards this year, with the number of Thoroughbreds joining T.I.P jumping from 2,140 that first year to over 8,300 in 2017.

Lindsey Taylor became infatuated with horses as a young girl and fell in love with racing at age 12. The Georgia native and recent Keeneland intern shares the details of her journey as a racing fan.

I am not sure if I became a fan of horse racing by coincidence or fate. I didn't grow up with horses, nor did I grow up in a place anywhere near areas that had horse racing. At the time I lived in Alpharetta, Ga., a suburb north of Atlanta, and somehow I inherited the “gene,” the “horse gene” as my mother likes to call it.
