The new episode of ABR Wired features ESPN’s “Stanford” Steve Coughlin attending the races at Saratoga Race Course. 

A SportsCenter commentator and producer on the midnight SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt, “Stanford” Steve also is a sports betting analyst who appears on the daily ESPN sports betting program “Daily Wager” as well as on the “Bad Beats” and “Where in the World isn’t SVP?” segments with Scott Van Pelt.

A former college football player, he also is co-host of Stanford Steve and The Bear podcast and an ESPN.com columnist.

This year, America’s Best Racing and the Retired Racehorse Project will be sharing diaries from several trainers preparing for the 2019 Thoroughbred Makeover competition, scheduled for Oct. 2-5 at the Kentucky Horse Park.

When you think of goats, you usually think of them being on a farm and/or being used for their milk. But they’ve also been known to be pets and — at the racetrack — a friend for a horse in need.

Horse trainer Dan Hendricks has a goat at his barn named Jack. He is one of the larger breeds of goat with big horns and he just might butt you if you make him mad, or show any fear. As far as what breed of goat he is, though, that’s up for grabs.

“He’s just a goat, Hendricks said.

Fans of Thoroughbred racing know how to root for their favorite equine athletes, but sports fans in general, whether they realize it or not, often root for their favorite human athletes whose uniforms bear the moniker of team names inspired by equines.

And it's easy to understand why sports teams, both pro and collegiate, want to be associated with the amazing qualities – heart, speed, and stamina – of horses.

When Colonial Downs reopens Aug. 8 after a five-year hiatus, announcer Jason Beem will welcome back race fans as the voice of the track. He will also contribute to race analysis, handicapping and social media.
