Churchill Downs announced April 23 that it will conduct a virtual running of the Kentucky Derby during a telecast on NBC on May 2 from 3-6 p.m. ET on the traditional day of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.

Called the “The Kentucky Derby: Triple Crown Showdown,” the virtual race is a computer-simulated version of the American classic, which was postponed this year due to COVID-19 from its traditional running on the first Saturday in May until Sept. 5.

Full disclosure: This one is going to be hard to write …

But as depressed as I have been feeling, I am starting to think that maybe it will help to put it all out there.

Horse racing is a notoriously private industry. Some people think it’s taboo to talk about the bad things and only stick to the good, but knowing about the bad makes celebrating the triumphs much more special.

Term of Art won’t be competing at the Thoroughbred Makeover this year. He may never be sound again, or the harshest of realities is that this may be something that we aren’t able to fix.

Well, it has been quite the year since I checked in last.  Oh, that was March? Right …

My day-to-day life hasn’t changed much. I’m considered “essential,” so I am still managing my small boarding farm. Additionally, mares continue to deliver their foals no matter what.

Horse racing is a sensory sport. So much of its excitement is generated from the colors that fill your eyes, the pungent smell of horse, and perhaps above all, its distinct sounds. The rhythmic beating of hooves in the dirt during morning training, punctuated by steady snorts; shouts and cheers from you and your friends as the longshot you have 10 bucks on crosses the finish line first; birds in the trees on a green spring morning leading in the herd.

With all major sports on hiatus across the United States as the nation battles the COVID-19 pandemic, Thoroughbred racing has managed to hold out in a few pockets of the country. While there are no fans populating the stands where racing continues — namely Arkansas, Florida, Nebraska, and Oklahoma — the action on the track continues.
