Building upon a successful launch last year, the second Horse Racing Women’s Summit, taking place Sept. 28 at Santa Anita Park, took on some of the most challenging issues facing racing. Horse safety was paramount during the first panel on the state of the industry.

The upcoming weekend is the first of two in a row featuring an abundance of Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” races both in the U.S. and overseas, and the majority of them will be shown live on television.

This year, America’s Best Racing and the Retired Racehorse Project will be sharing diaries from several trainers preparing for the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover competition, scheduled for Oct. 11-14 at the Kentucky Horse Park. Meet adult amateur rider Morgan Hayden and her RRP hopeful, Goldie, as they gear up for their maiden voyage to the Thoroughbred Makeover.

Larry Demeritte used to watch the Kentucky Derby in his native Bahamas and dream the dream. He was a top trainer in his homeland. Perhaps one day he could saddle a horse good enough to run for the roses.

The drive to make that happen led him to come to the United States in the mid-1970s and eventually become a citizen. Although he developed a reputation for having a keen eye for inexpensive horses that far outran their purchase prices, his Derby dream seemed like nothing more than fantasy.

Books are a remarkable part of our lives. They bind us together through the joys and struggles of characters, both real and fictional, and offer us new perspectives on our own experiences in ways that few media can. Whether it is horses long gone like Lexington or people still a part of the sport like Julie Krone, the words captured on a page are avenues to new worlds and chances to remind us of our connections.
