After a busy Memorial Day weekend, horse racing coverage on TV, radio and livestreaming continues to build in anticipation of the Belmont Stakes Festival, a three-day smorgasbord of racing at Belmont Park starting Thursday, June 9 and ending Saturday, June 11 with the 154th running of the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets.

Welcome to another racing season. Whether you’re a hard-core handicapper, a casual fan, or simply looking to make the most of a sun-drenched Saturday, a day at the racetrack is the great equalizer of sports. A summer lineup of horse races at a host of amazing venues across the country is an enticing prospect, no matter your experience with the sport.

Leading up to race day, a guy has a lot on his mind. What horse am I going to bet on? Should I take an Uber so I can partake in the track’s signature drink? And of course, what am I going to wear?

Rich Strike catapulted himself to the forefront of the American racing scene on the first Saturday in May this year. With a dramatic come-from-behind rally, he won the 2022 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve in a shocking 80.80-1 upset, making him the second-biggest longshot to win the race in history. His underdog status has made him a fan favorite.

For the past 20 years, Blue has been a pony at Pimlico Race Course. He is quite a contrast to the sleek Thoroughbreds. He is highly visible with his dynamic black and white coat and his startling “Paul Newman” blue eyes. He has a huge head that sometimes looks like it belongs on a different horse. His pink, leathery lips are loose, and his mouth always seems to be open. He can be a challenge to photograph because from some viewpoints, he is somewhat dinosaur-like. Yet he has a certain cache about him.

Six semifinalists for the 16th annual Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award have been selected by a panel of judges and were split evenly this year between fiction and non-fiction. These semifinalists were chosen from nearly two dozen submissions, a healthy indicator that interest in horse racing remains very much alive despite the crippling effects of a two-year global pandemic.
