Raul Mena was introduced to the sport by his father, Raul Mena Sr., in his native Chile and started jockeys’ school at the age of 16. He overcame a career-threatening fall at Valparaiso Sporting Club in Chile when he was 19 years old but never lost his faith or passion for the sport.

Mena cane to the U.S. and took out his jockey’s license in 2015. He was mentored early in his career by countryman and Hall of Fame jockey Jose Santos. Mena set a career high for wins in a season in 2019 with 68 and won 67 races the following year. In 2021, Mena set a career-best with $1,783,227 in purse earnings, a number he would eclipse in 2024 with $1,827,767.
