John McKee began his career at River Downs, setting a seasonal win record for an apprentice jockey at the Cincinnati track in 2002. He then found success at Oaklawn Park during the mid-2000s, leading the Hot Springs, Ark., track in wins for its 2004 meet. McKee first gained national prominence during this time as the rider of Lawyer Ron early in that horse’s accomplished career. McKee won four stakes races with Lawyer Ron in 2006, topped by the Arkansas Derby.
