Jessica Pyfer formed her love for horses early, growing up as the daughter of an exercise rider and the step-daughter of trainer Phil D’Amato. She began exercising horses as a teenager for her father and other horsemen and horsewomen, but initially harbored an ambition to become a lawyer before a meeting with Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella motivated her to pursue a career as a professional jockey.

Pyfer won her first race in October 2020 at Santa Anita Park, and during 2021, Pyfer established herself as an up-and-coming rider on the competitive Southern California circuit, finishing sixth in the rider standings at Santa Anita Park for the 2020-2021 winter-spring meet with 36 wins and in the top 10 in the rider standings at the competitive Del Mar summer meet with 10 wins. Pyfer led all North American apprentice jockeys in 2021 with over $2.7 million in earnings.
Based on those accomplishments, Pyfer received the Eclipse Award as Outstanding Apprentice Jockey for 2021.
