Wavell Avenue broke her maiden in her third start and then reeled off three consecutive victories. She finished third in her stakes debut in June 2015 and finished second in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Stakes at Belmont behind top filly sprinter La Verdad to merit her entry into the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, a race which she won at 10-1 odds.

After winning one of six starts in 2016, Wavell Avenue was sent off at odds of 13.90-to-1 in the 2016 Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita Park. After racing well off the pace early, she closed strongly under Joel Rosario to finish second by three-quarters of a length to Finest City.
Wavell Avenue is a daugther of Harlington out of the multiple stakes-placed Silver Deputy mare Lucas Street. She is a product of the Eugene Melnyk breeding operation, which bred 2007 Canadian Horse of the Year Sealy Hill.
