A Pennsylvania-bred son of Tizway, The Critical Way won his first career stakes race at Penn National on June 3, 2017, taking the Danzig Stakes by half a length under Javier Castellano.
It would be more than three years before The Critical Way won another stakes race. He took the Marshall Jenney Handicap at Parx Racing by 4 1/2 lengths in Sept. 7, 2020, drawing away after a brief speed duel. A few months later, he won the Turf Dash Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs by half a length on Feb. 24, 2021, holding off the late rally of Imprimis while covering five furlongs in 55.30 seconds.

The Critical Way earned another stakes victory on June 19, 2021, when he won the Get Serious Stakes at Monmouth Park in an impressive time of 55.19 for five furlongs. He earned another Monmouth stakes win on July 17, winning the Wolf Hill Stakes by 3/4 of a length.
In his 27th career start, the gelding broke through with his first graded stakes victory, taking the Grade 3 Parx Dash Stakes at Parx Racing on Aug. 31 by a hard-fought nose under Paco Lopez.
On May 22, 2022, The Critical Way made his 8-year-old debut in the Get Serious Stakes at Monmouth. He won in gate-to-wire fashion by 2 1/2 lengths under Angel Rodriguez.
