South Bend began his career with three straight wins, taking a maiden race at Churchill Downs and an allowance race at Keeneland before winning the Street Sense Stakes Oct. 27 at Churchill by a length. He faded to sixth in his graded stakes debut in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and then finished a well-beaten fourth in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes in his 3-year-old bow.

South Bend subsequently was switched to the turf and placed in three straight stakes races, including the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park. But after back-to-back unplaced finishes in turf stakes, South Bend went back to the main track and closed willingly to finish second in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby.
After the Ohio Derby, South Bend was purchased privately by Peter Deutsch, Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and Pantofel Stable and transferred to Bill Mott. He ran fourth in the Runhappy Travers Stakes Aug. 8 at Saratoga in his first race for his new connections.
