Great Escape was the 1.90-1 favorite in his second career start, a six-furlong maiden special weight at Churchill Downs on Sept. 18, 2021. He drew off in the stretch to win by 2 1/4 lengths.
The Midnight Storm colt next tried graded stakes company in the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland but finished ninth in his final start as a juvenile.

He returned at age 3 and finished second in an allowance optional claiming race at Oaklawn Park and then 11th in the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park. After one more start at Churchill Downs, the colt was sold to a new ownership group and transferred to trainer Robertino Diodoro.
Resurfacing in Canada, Great Escape finished second in two straight stakes races at Assiniboia Downs. He then broke through with his first stakes win on Aug. 20 in the Grade 3 Century Mile, stalking the pace and surging clear in the stretch to score by 3 ½ lengths.
