General Jim

General Jim won his maiden race in his second career start as a 2-year-old in a 1 1/16-mile turf race at Saratoga on Sept. 3, 2022. He quickly followed that up with his second career win in his next outing when he beat first-level allowances horses at Keeneland in another 1 1/16-mile turf race on Oct. 29. He ended his juvenile campaign with a third-place finish in his stakes debut in the $120,000 Central Park Stakes at Aqueduct on Nov. 26.

General Jim made his 3-year-old debut on New Year's Day 2023 in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream. The race was a departure for him from his earlier races, switching to the dirt in a race at one mile on the main track. General Jim finished fourth but lacked racing room through the stretch run with a brutal trip.

General Jim stayed in the dirt for his next start and cut back in distance again at seven furlongs in the Grade 3 $125,000 Swale Stakes at Gulfstream on Feb. 4. The move was successful. General Jim earned his first career win in the Swale, topping a five-horse field by a length in a time of 1:24.34. As the 8-5 second choice on the tote board, General Jim paid $5.20 to win.

General Jim was next pointed to the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes March 4 at Gulfstream Park but he was scratched on the morning of the race. He instead made his next start in the Pat Day Mile Stakes presented by TwinSpires on the May 6 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve undercard. General Jim engaged with Fort Bragg in an extended battle through the stretch of the Pat Day Mile before edging ahead late to win by a neck in 1:34.43.

General Jim is trained by Shug McGaughey. He was bred in Kentucky by the sire Into Mischief out of the mare Inspired By Grace by Curlin.
