El Grande O began his career on May 28 of his 2-year-old season and won his maiden race in his third career start in a five-furlong turf sprint at Belmont Park on July 7, 2023. He added New York-bred stakes wins in September and October in the $125,000 Bertram Bongard Stakes and the $200,000 Sleepy Hollow Stakes at Aqueduct. He entered the road to the Kentucky Derby for the first time in his 3-year-old seasonal debut on Jan. 6, 2024 in the $150,000 Jerome Stakes at one mile, where he finished second.

The dark bay or brown colt followed that effort up with an even better runner-up finish in another Kentucky Derby prep at Aqueduct, the Grade 3 Withers Stakes Feb. 3, taking the lead in early stretch and continuing on gamely to the finish only to lose by a head to late-charging Uncle Heavy. The next appearance for El Grande O came in another prep race on the road to the Kentucky Derby in the one-mile, Grade 3 $300,000 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct on March 2, when he finished third.
El Grande O is trained by Linda Rice. He was bred in New York by the sire Take Charge Andy out of the mare Rainbow's Song by Unbridled's Song.
