A homebred of John E. Anthony’s Shortleaf Stable, Caddo River finished second in each of his first two races in September 2020 at Saratoga Race Course and in October at Belmont Park.
The Hard Spun colt broke through with a dominant victory when stretching out to a mile Nov. 15 at Churchill Downs and employing new front-running tactics. Caddo River seized command early and opened a two-length lead before surging well clear in a 9 ½-length romp.

Coming off a layoff of more than 10 weeks for his 3-year-old debut in the Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 22 at Oaklawn Park, Caddo River made his first race on the Triple Crown trail a memorable one with another front-running, runaway victory to earn 10 points toward qualifying for the 2021 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
In his final prep before the Derby, Caddo River finished second in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby on Apr. 10, after setting fast early fractions and hanging on late. In the process, he earned 40 more qualifying points.
Grade 2-placed stakes winner Pangburn, by Congrats, is the dam (mother) of Caddo River, who hails from the family of 1985 Preakness Stakes winner Tank’s Prospect.
