American Apple was the upset winner of the Grade 3 $150,000 Matron Stakes at Belmont at the Big A in her fifth career start. After beginning her career as a 2-year-old, she was unsuccessful in her first three maiden outings including a pair of dirt sprints at Churchill Downs and a turf route race at Ellis Park, where she finished third on July 15, 2022. American Apple immediately turned things around in a positive direction when switched to a turf sprint for the first time. She won her first race in a $156,000 maiden race at Kentucky Downs going 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf on Sept. 14.

American Apple made her next start in the Matron on Oct. 8, where she was sent off at 47-1 odds in a field of 11. American Apple couldn't read the tote board, however, and cruised to victory going six furlongs in 1:09.59 with Eric Cancel aboard, paying $97 to win.
