Destin won his career debut in October 2015 at Belmont Park before stretching out to a mile and finishing second at Gulfstream Park in December.

After a disappointing fourth-place finish in his stakes debut in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes, Destin scored a breakthrough stakes victory in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in February 2016. He followed up with a determined win in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby that punched his ticket to the 2016 Kentucky Derby.

Destin looked boldly in the Kentucky Derby but flattened out and finished sixth, beaten by seven lengths. Rather than move on to the Preakness, trainer Todd Pletcher rested Destin for the Belmont Stakes and the move paid dividends. Destin took command in the stretch and looked poised to earn a classic victory before Creator caught him in the closing strides. He earned $280,000 for the runner-up finish in the Belmont Stakes.

Destin returned in July in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes and finished third. He was unplaced in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes in his final race at three.

Destin returned in May 2017 and kicked off his 4-year-old season with a third-place finish in an allowance race. He followed with a hard-fought allowance victory in August at Saratoga Race Course. Returning to stakes company for the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, Destin never threatened after stumbling at the start and finished a well-beaten fifth. He got back on track in his fourth race of the year, edging past Infobedad in the stretch  en route to a victory in the Grade 2 Marathon Stakes Presented by TAA on the undercard of the Breeders' Cup Friday card.

A $400,000 purchase at the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale, Destin is a full-brother (same dam, same sire) to classic-place Grade 1 winner Creative Cause. Destin's dam, Dream of Summer, is a Grade 1 winner.
