The race was first run in 1988, restricted to 3-year-olds at a distance of 1 1/4 miles as the Molson Export Challenge. After three years the distance was changed to 1 1/2 miles before the current 1 mile distance was adopted for the 1997 running. Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan won the race in each of his championship seasons. The Woodbine Mile is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series "Win and You're In" qualifying race for the Mile.
