After a dull performance in his career debut, Oscar Performance led from start to finish in a dominating 10 1/4-length romp in a 1 1/16-mile turf race at Saratoga Race Course. He then was tested in stakes competition in the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes and passed with flying colors with a comfortable victory that cemented his credentials as a leading candidate for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
After a dull performance in his career debut, Oscar Performance led from start to finish in a dominating 10 1/4-length romp in a 1 1/16-mile turf race at Saratoga Race Course. He then was tested in stakes competition in the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes and passed with flying colors with a comfortable victory that cemented his credentials as a leading candidate for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
In the first race on Breeders' Cup Friday, Oscar Performance took command in the stretch and scooted to a clear lead before holding off the late rush of Lancaster Bomber and Good Samaritan for a clear victory.
After disappointing unplaced finishes in graded stakes at Keeneland and Churchill Downs to begin his 3-year-old season, Oscar Performance won the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park in June. He then dominated the opposition in a front-running victory in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes before demonstrating his versatility by rallying from off the pace to win the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at the Arlington International Festival of Racing. In his next start, Oscar Performance challenged older horses in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic and once again raced off of the pace. He had no answer for Beach Patrol when challenging the eventual winner in early stretch but held on well to finish third.
Oscar Performance next started in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf at Del Mar, and set the pace before tiring late to finish ninth. He did not return for his first start at age five until June 2018, but showed no rust at all from the layoff in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes at Belmont Park. Against a strong field, he pulled clear in the stretch to win by 1 ½ lengths, and set a new course record on Belmont's Widener turf course of 1:31.23 for one mile.
After a scare in the Arlington Million in which Oscar Performance was pulled up in the stretch but was uninjured, he got back on track with his fourth career Grade 1 win in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes on Sept. 15.
By 2004 champion turf male Kitten's Joy out of the stakes-winning Theatrical mare Devine Actress, Oscar Performance is a full brother to 2016 Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes winner Oscar Nominated.
