Considered by most to be the greatest field ever assembled for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the race drew future Hall of Famer and dual classic winner Silver Charm, European star Swain, 1997 Belmont Stakes winner Touch Gold, 1998 Belmont Stakes winner Victory Gallop, future Hall of Famer and eventual 1998 Horse of the Year Skip Away, and 1998 Haskell and Travers Stakes winner Coronado’s Quest. But it was Awesome Again who shined brightest on the grand stage by unleashing a powerful late rally to win by three-quarters of a length to cap an unbeaten 6-for-6 season.
