Maria Borell earned her first career graded stakes win when Runhappy earned a breakthrough victory in the Grade 1 NYRA.com King's Bishop Stakes on Aug. 29, 2015, at Saratoga Race Course. He subsequently won the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes to cement his credentials as one of the favorites for the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Runhappy later won the Sprint as Borell's first Breeders' Cup starter, setting a track record for six furlongs.

A Syracuse, N.Y. native, Borell served as an assistant to Barclay Tagg and worked for a stretch exercising horses and as a veterinary technician. Before 2015, she had never won a race of any kind and 10 months later she had a Breeders' Cup Sprint winner.
