Alain de Royer-Dupre grew up at Haras de Saint Lô, a national stud farm in Normandy, France that his father was director of. Royer-Dupre started his career at Haras du Mesnil, working there for eight years and launching his training stable while at the farm.
He later became the Aga Khan's chief trainer, headquartered in Chantilly. As a trainer, Royer-Dupre has won each of the French classics at least twice and captured the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Dalakhani in 2003 and the unbeaten Zarkava in 2008.
