Justify swept the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets to become just the 13th Triple Crown winner in history. Unfortunately, a minor injury was discovered before he raced again and the colt was retired to stud duty at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky, where he stands alongside fellow Triple Crown hero American Pharoah.

What happened next and where is he now?
Last year’s runner-up continued on to the Preakness, where he finished fourth, and resurfaced later in the summer to win the betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes at Monmouth Park. He was retired after a disappointing effort in the Runhappy Travers Stakes and now is a stallion at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Kentucky.

Audible was given a vacation after the Derby, reappearing with a win in the Cherokee Run Stakes at Churchill Downs on the Breeders’ Cup undercard in November. He finished second in the Grade 2 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes in December and, most recently, finished a good fifth in the $12 million Dubai World Cup in March 2019.

Instilled Regard went off as the biggest longshot in the field but managed to outrun his odds and finish fourth. After the Derby, Instilled Regard did not race again until September, finishing ninth in the Pennsylvania Derby. He then was moved to the turf, finishing third in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby in December and making his 4-year-old debut with a runner-up effort in a Keeneland turf allowance race this spring.

What happened next and where is he now?
A “wise guy” horse heading into last year’s Derby, My Boy Jack headed to the turf after the first Saturday in May, finishing eighth in the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes in July, but was then given the rest of the year off. He hasn’t yet raced in 2019 but has shown a steady pattern of timed workouts at his home track of Santa Anita Park in California.

What happened next and where is he now?
Bravazo went on to race in nearly every major 3-year-old race of 2018, including a runner-up effort in both the Preakness Stakes and Haskell Invitational and a third-place finish in the Travers. He finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and second in the Clark Handicap to set him up for the Pegasus World Cup in January 2019, where he finished fourth. He was slated to race in the Dubai World Cup this spring but was sidelined by a knee injury and is now recuperating from surgery in Kentucky.
Derby finish: Seventh place
What happened next and where is he now?
Hofburg finished third in the Belmont Stakes and won the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga before going unplaced in his two final 2018 starts. He recently returned to training at Churchill Downs, recording a pair of timed workouts there this month.

Lone Sailor has raced nine times since the Kentucky Derby, finishing second and third in several graded stakes before a win in the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby in September. After two unplaced efforts to wrap up 2018 and kick off 2019, he finished third in the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap and then second in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap this month.

Vino Rosso finished fourth in the Belmont Stakes and third in the Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets last summer. He returned in 2019 with a win in the Stymie Stakes and, most recently, a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap this month.

What happened next and where is he now?
Solomini finished third in the Affirmed Stakes five weeks after the Derby but wouldn’t race again until December. That effort was a disappointing ninth-place finish in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes and he has raced three times since, winning an allowance but going unplaced in his only other stakes try, the Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland this month.

The 1 ¼ miles of the Derby proved too long for Firenze Fire, and he became a multiple graded stakes-winning sprinter over the summer of 2018. He wrapped up his season with a fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and made his 4-year-old debut in late March 2019, finishing third in a sprint stakes race at Tampa Bay Downs.

What happened next and where is he now?
In a bold move, Bolt d’Oro took on older horses in the historic Runhappy Metropolitan Handicap five weeks after the Derby but finished a disappointing 11th and last. With a stud deal already in place, the decision was made to retire the colt from racing. He began his new career as a stallion at Spendthrift Farm this spring.

What happened next and where is he now?
Flameaway ran three more times in 2018 with his best finish a runner-up effort in the Jim Dandy Stakes in July. In 2019, he has a win and a third-place effort from three stakes tries so far. He’s currently training at Keeneland in Kentucky.

What happened next and where is he now?
Enticed hasn’t raced since the Kentucky Derby but has returned to training this year, with several timed workouts at Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.
Derby finish: 15th place
What happened next and where is he now?
After setting quick fractions and then tiring in the Kentucky Derby, Promises Fulfilled cut back in distance to become a Grade 1-winning sprinter. He won the H. Allen Jerkens Stakes as well as two other graded stakes before wrapping up his season with a fourth-place finish in the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The colt made his 2019 debut in Dubai with another fourth-place effort in the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen Sponsored by Gulf News in March. He’s currently training at Churchill Downs.

Free Drop Billy finished seventh in the Belmont Stakes and eighth in a turf stakes in September before the decision was made to retire the colt from racing. Like Bolt d’Oro, he began his stud career at Spendthrift Farm this spring.

Noble Indy raced twice more in 2018, finishing at the back of the pack both times, and has not had much more success in 2019. He was gelded prior to his 4-year-old debut where he finished fourth, and hasn’t fared any better in his two tries since but remains in training with Todd Pletcher.

Combatant continued racing throughout 2018 with his best results a pair of third-place stakes finishes. In 2019, he finished seventh in his season debut and second in his most recent try April 13 at Oaklawn Park.

Undefeated prior to the Kentucky Derby, Magnum Moon suffered an unfortunate career-ending injury a few weeks after the Derby while training at Belmont Park. He underwent successful surgery but faced a long road to recovery. As of November 2018, his recovery continued to go well.

Highly regarded European invader Mendelssohn continued to race in the U.S. after the Kentucky Derby despite remaining in Ireland for training, shipping across the pond for each race. He finished second or third in three graded stakes over the summer as well as fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and fourth in the Cigar Mile before retiring to stud duty at his owners’ Ashford Stud in Kentucky. The well-bred colt began his second career as a stallion this spring.
