Gun Runner, the 2017 Eclipse Award winner as Horse of the Year, checked in second in the new September Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings with a rating of 129. Gun Runner was retired after he closed his career with a 2 ½-length win in the Grade 1, $16.3-million Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 27 at Gulfstream Park.
The new rankings featured several newcomers to the Top 10, but Australian superstar Winx maintained her spot on top after she won her return to the races following a 126-day layoff in the Group 1 Winx Stakes, a race was formerly known as the Warwick Stakes that was renamed in her honor.
Winx, rated at 130, is scheduled to race next in the Group 1 Colgate Optic White Stakes on Sept. 15. She has won the last two editions of that race and will attempt to extend her winning streak to 27.
Tied with Gun Runner at 129 is Poet’s Word, who won Group 1 races in June and July before finishing second in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes to Roaring Lion, who made his way into the top five of the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings with a rating of 127, just behind Crystal Ocean (128).
Roaring Lion will race Saturday in the Irish Champion Stakes during Longines Irish Champions Weekend.
U.S.-based Accelerate (126) moved into the top six after a dominant win in the Grade 1, $1-million TVG Pacific Classic, in which he pulled away to win by 12 ½ lengths. Previously rated at 121, Accelerate won the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes in May.
U.S. Triple Crown winner Justify is tied for 10th, along with fellow U.S.-based runner West Coast, with a rating of 124. Catholic Boy checked in at 122, tied for 17th along with fellow U.S.-based 3-year-old Good Magic, after his four-length victory over Mendelssohn (120) in the Grade 1 Runhappy Travers Stakes.
