The $1 million TVG Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar is always a highlight of horse racing’s summer calendar. The 1 ¼-mile test annually brings together some of the top older dirt horses in the country to compete for $1 million in prize money and also a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November, as the Pacific Classic is a Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” race that offers an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic to the winner.

The Pacific Classic will be televised on TVG Saturday evening, the centerpiece of the network’s comprehensive coverage of Del Mar’s summer meet.

He finished second and third in stakes races this spring at Santa Anita Park, both won by Pacific Classic foe Dr. Dorr, and then picked up his first stakes win in the Grade 3 All American Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on May 28, held on Golden Gate’s synthetic main track. He then was shipped to New York and picked up the pieces with a late run to finish second in the 1 ¼-mile Grade 2 Suburban Stakes at Belmont Park, 6 ½ lengths behind front-running winner and top-tier Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Diversify. This horse is in consistent form and could earn a minor placing in Saturday’s Pacific Classic, but appears to be a cut below the top win candidates. This will be the first Pacific Classic for Drayden Van Dyke, who ranks second in earnings and is tied for second in wins through Aug. 14 at Del Mar’s summer meet.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This gelding rose out of the allowance/optional claiming ranks and emerged as a stakes-caliber competitor for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert earlier this year, winning the Santana Mile Stakes and then the Grade 2 Californian Stakes at Santa Anita Park by a combined margin of 11 ¼ lengths. He then tested tougher competition in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita and finished second while being no match for winner Accelerate, and, after a fruitless trip to New York where he faded to ninth of 10 in the Suburban Stakes, he returned to California and was runner-up to Catalina Cruiser in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap, Del Mar’s local prep race for the TVG Pacific Classic. That emerging star won’t race in the Pacific Classic, but Accelerate will, and Dr. Dorr will need a career-best effort to turn the tables on his Gold Cup vanquisher. Look for jockey Joe Talamo to be aggressive in pushing his mount to the lead right out of the gate, as the gelding’s best performances have come when he takes control of the pace early. Talamo is making his seventh start in the Pacific Classic without a placing. Baffert, on the other hand, sits just behind the late Bobby Frankel with five wins in Del Mar’s signature race – General Challenge (1999), Polytrack specialist Richard’s Kid (2009 and 2010), Game On Dude (2013), and Collected (2017).

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This Unbridled’s Song horse has done his best racing on turf but does have one Grade 3 win and a second-place finish in a Grade 2 stakes on dirt over the past nine months. That Grade 3 score, coming in the Native Diver Stakes last fall at Del Mar, is his only win since March 2017. He enters the Pacific Classic off of a near-miss third-place finish in the Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes on Del Mar’s grass course, where he lost by a neck and earned a career-best 123 Equibase Speed Figure. He’s another horse in the Pacific Classic field who prefers to race near the lead, and should be among the front pack of horses going through the first turn and into the backstretch. He retains the services of Kent Desormeaux from the Eddie Read; the Hall of Fame jockey has one win from 13 starts in the Pacific Classic – Missionary Ridge in the second running of the race back in 1992 – as well as two seconds and four thirds.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This Southern Hemisphere transport is the true mystery horse in the Pacific Classic field, boasting a fine race record against competition that, while well-regarded in his home continent, is questionable here. His most recent win came in the Group 1 Longines Gran Premio Latinoamericano at Hipodromo Nacional de Maronas in Uruguay on March 11, which is generally considered one of the premier dirt races in South America. In the Latinoamericano, he raced in third through the backstretch about four or five lengths off the pace and then moved closer through the far turn before angling out for a closing move at the top of the stretch. He wore down the leaders methodically and wavered a bit as another horse came up to challenge late, finishing up the nearly 1 ¼-mile distance in a slow 2:02.05. Prior to that, he won the Nov. 11, 2017 Group 1 Gran Premio Nacional in Argentina at about 1 ½ miles on the front end and never received any serious pressure in a six-length romp that also produced a slow final time of 2:34.29. He has been working steadily at Del Mar for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert since coming to America, and Flavien Prat, who leads in wins and earnings at the current Del Mar meeting, has the mount – so there’s no talent shortage behind this horse as he makes his U.S. debut in a very tough spot. Look for him to be prominent early and have his cruising speed tested by the likes of Accelerate, Prime Attraction, and stablemate Dr. Dorr. Prat finished second in the 2015 Pacific Classic with Catch a Flight, another Argentine-bred who began his career in South America.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: He’s the most accomplished runner in this year’s Pacific Classic field, and although he’s yet to amass a following similar to recent West Coast stars California Chrome and Arrogate, he’s proven his mettle time and time again against the best handicap horses in training and stands to become one of the favorites for this fall’s Breeders’ Cup Classic if he wins on Saturday. He’s won three of four starts this year with his only loss by a neck to City of Light in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap in April. In his 2018 debut, he defeated Pacific Classic foe Prime Attraction by 1 ¾ lengths in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Handicap, and then routed his opponents in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap Presented by San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in March, winning by 5 ½ lengths. In his most recent start, he again romped in a Grade 1 stakes, taking the Gold Cup at Santa Anita by 4 ¼ lengths over Dr. Dorr. He’s versatile enough to either control the pace (as he did last summer in arguably his career-best effort when defeating Arrogate soundly in the TVG San Diego Handicap) or sit just off of the lead. He’s also 2-for-3 at this 1 ¼-mile distance. Joel Rosario replaces regular rider Victor Espinoza for Saturday’s Pacific Classic while the Hall of Famer recovers from a spinal cord injury. Rosario won the 2012 Pacific Classic aboard Dullahan. Trainer John Sadler has finished second twice and third twice in the Pacific Classic, including third last year with Accelerate.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This son of the recently departed “Iron Horse” and elite sire Giant’s Causeway looms as a live longshot in the Pacific Classic based on his recent form. He enters off of an impressive 4 ¾-length win over 3-5 favorite and $4.7-million earner Hoppertunity in the July 25 Grade 3 Cougar II Handicap held at 1 ½ miles on Del Mar’s dirt track. He enjoyed an ideal ground-saving trip in that race and had plenty in reserve for a stretch rally after stalking the pace. In his seven starts before that win, he raced competitively in the allowance ranks at Santa Anita and also finished a decent fourth in the 1 ½-mile Tokyo City Cup Handicap last year while racing primarily on turf. His speed figures are not too far behind those of the more accomplished contenders in Saturday’s Pacific Classic, and if he can improve off his career-best race a few weeks ago – which was his first start at Del Mar and third on dirt – he has an outside chance at springing the upset. Rafael Bejarano retains the mount from the Cougar II; the Southern California-based jockey has finished third twice in the Pacific Classic from nine starts.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This talented and highly regarded colt delivered on his promise under the lights at Churchill Downs in June when he won the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap by a dominant 3 ¾ lengths, earning a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in the process. He first turned heads in fall 2017 with a sharp win in the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx Racing and then raced against some of the best dirt horses in the world in graded stakes over his next six starts leading up to the Stephen Foster, finishing fourth four consecutive times before his breakthrough victory in Louisville. In terms of running style, he prefers to sit in midpack or farther back from the leaders, which could serve him well in a Pacific Classic field largely comprised of pace-pressing types. He’s had a series of solid maintenance workouts at Del Mar leading up to Saturday’s marquee race and looms as the main challenger to morning-line favorite Accelerate. One note of caution: his career-worst race, by far, came in last November’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar when he was never a threat and finished 10^th of 11. That was only his fourth career start, however, and may have been a case of “too much, too soon” for his ambitious owner J. Paul Reddam, who has teamed with trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Mario Gutierrez to win two Kentucky Derbys. O’Neill has won the Pacific Classic once in 10 prior tries, with fan favorite Lava Man in 2006. He’s also finished third twice. Reddam's Momentum finished second in the 2002 Pacific Classic; he also co-owned 2010 runner-up Crowded House.

8. Two Thirty Five (20-1)

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This Stay Thirsty gelding was claimed by his current owners and trainer Richard Baltas after finishing third in a 6 ½-furlong race on Jan. 15 at Santa Anita, and since then he has improved substantially while being stretched out to route races, winning three of five starts. In his most recent race, he finished a distant fourth in the TVG San Diego Handicap, his first stakes try. He does have a good stalking style for Saturday’s 1 ¼-mile Pacific Classic but is deservedly the longest shot in the field on the morning line and will need to muster a career-best effort and have several other contenders to run substantially worse than usual in order to hit the board. Baltas has sent two prior horses to the Pacific Classic without a placing. This is jockey Franklin Ceballos’ first Pacific Classic start; he has been aboard Two Thirty Five for his last three races.

Llega aquí luego de un impresionante triunfo por 4 ¾-cuerpos sobre el favorito a 3-5 y amasador de $4.7-millones en premios, Hoppertunity, el 25 de Julio en el Grado 3 Cougar II Handicap tramitado sobre 1 ½ millas en la pista de arena de Del Mar. Gozó de un desarrollo ideal ahorrando terreno por dentro en esa carrera y tuvo plenitud de fuerzas para una atropellada en la recta después de venir siguiendo a los punteros. En su carrera más reciente, finalizó como distante cuarto en el TVG San Diego Handicap, su primer intento clásico.
