Sunday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes at Keeneland is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 3. First held in 1956, the 1 1/8-mile race has been won by some of the best fillies and mares of the past 60-plus years, including Gallant Bloom, Susan’s Girl, Princess Rooney, Bayakoa, Inside Information, and Take Charge Lady.
This year, 11 fillies and mares are entered in the Spinster, which will be broadcast live by NBC, with a scheduled post time of 5:45 p.m. ET. She should have the highest odds in the race at post time and has been outclassed when competing in prior graded stakes, with one exception being a decent third-place effort in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap last spring behind Unbridled Mo and Unique Bella. She is experienced at this 1 1/8-mile distance, with one win in six prior starts, and enters the Spinster off of a 1 ½-length victory at Thistledown in a one-mile allowance against much softer competition. She’s in the midst of her best season in terms of earnings, but a minor award would appear to be this mare’s ceiling in Sunday’s race.

She appears to be peaking at the right time for trainer Kenny McPeek, who won back-to-back editions of the Spinster in 2002 and 2003 with Take Charge Lady. On a speed-figure basis, her best career effort did come in her most recent race, however that was only a 95 figure, significantly lower than most of this field, and it came in a runner-up finish at Thistledown to owner Loooch Racing's and trainer Anthony Quartarolo’s other entrant, Fuhriously Kissed. Southernperfection will probably be sent to the front to help ensure a quick pace for Fuhriously Kissed to close into. Owner, trainer, and jockey Albin Jiminez all are looking for their first win in the Spinster.

She then ran even worse as the 9-5 favorite in the Iowa Oaks, finishing seventh and defeated by 18 ½ lengths, but showed some life in her most recent start when second by three-quarters of a length to Spinster foe Skeptic in the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks on Aug. 18. Even if this filly is rounding back into form, she has yet to break the triple-digit mark in terms of Equibase Speed Figures and will have to run a career-best race to secure a top-three finish against this field. She has been training well at Churchill Downs leading up to this race, with a couple of good workouts on sloppy tracks during a wet September in Kentucky, so an off track may boost her chances.

In the 1 ¼-mile Alabama, she set a fast early pace, and that ended up being her undoing late when she tired in the stretch and finished fourth, defeated by seven lengths. She faced a tough field in the Alabama: winner Eskimo Kisses returns in the Spinster; runner-up She’s a Julie recently won the Remington Park Oaks; and third-place finisher Midnight Bisou won the Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing over Monomoy Girl last month when that potential champion was disqualified. Prior to this filly’s start in the Alabama, she romped in the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks by 4 ¾ lengths. She’s a threat to rebound in a big way on Sunday for young trainer Rodolphe Brisset if she can slow the pace down on the lead, although Skeptic, Pacific Wind, and possibly Blue Prize should not be too far behind her through the backstretch. However, in the race between her wins at Churchill and Monmouth Park, she was no match for Talk Veuve to Me in the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks, racing in contention through the backstretch but then fading to finish fourth, 11 ½ lengths back. Her Equibase Speed Figures are inferior to Talk Veuve to Me and several others in this field, and she’ll need to improve substantially to stay with her familiar rival through the entirety of the Spinster’s 1 1/8 miles – a distance she’s yet to try. Longtime Kentucky-based trainer Rusty Arnold won the Spinster last year with Romantic Vision, and he also won in 1997 with Clear Mandate; both horses were owned by Skeptic’s co-owner, G. Watts Humphrey Jr. Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. was aboard Romantic Vision last year.

In her only prior start at Keeneland, she finished a rallying third in last year’s Spinster on a sloppy track, but was defeated by 7 ½ lengths. Expect jockey Joe Bravo to have her closer to the pace on Sunday and in good position to make a move for the lead in early stretch. She has already secured an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup via her win in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Handicap back in June at Churchill Downs, so she does not need to win on Sunday … but expect a good performance as she tunes up for a return to her home track in Louisville, where she is 3-2-0 in five starts.
