The Queen’s Plate is Canadian racing’s equivalent to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve as the first jewel in our northern neighbor’s Triple Crown. The 1 ¼-mile race, held at Woodbine on its synthetic-surface main track, is the oldest continuously run race in North America, dating back to 1860. This year’s running marks the 159th consecutive year some of the finest Canadian-bred 3-year-old Thoroughbreds will compete in front of thousands of fans in what is annually the high mark on the country’s racing calendar.
A field of 16 horses is slated to run in the Queen’s Plate on Saturday. The race will be broadcast on TVG.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This gelding has made seven of his eight starts on Woodbine’s Tapeta surface, the other coming on its turf course. He has not finished worse than fourth in his career, and will be a pace factor in the Queen’s Plate if he can repeat the effort he put forth in his two most recent starts – a runner-up finish in a seven-furlong sprint in April and then a gritty head win in a 1 1/16-mile race on May 20. His ability to handle the Queen’s Plate’s mile-and-a-quarter distance is a major question mark, however. Jockey Jesse Campbell won the 2013 Queen’s Plate aboard Midnight Aria.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This gelding is one of the more experienced horses in this year’s Queen’s Plate, with 11 career starts, and he can usually be counted on to provide a good effort, finishing in the money six times. He has started on Woodbine’s main track seven times and has collected all three of his wins on Tapeta, although he was elevated to first from second in the April 21 Wando Stakes after first-place finisher Machtree was disqualified for interfering with two other horses. Most recently, Inge finished fifth in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes after setting the early pace. He is another Queen’s Plate competitor who figures to be among the early leaders, but he has had trouble finishing races strongly this year at age 3 and faces a major challenge in the mile-and-a-quarter classic. Jockey Chantal Sutherland began her riding career at Woodbine, winning two Sovereign Awards as apprentice jockey there in the early 2000s, and she is currently based once again at the Toronto track, ranking ninth in earnings. Trainer Norm McKnight is also a Woodbine mainstay, sitting second behind Mark Casse in earnings and wins for the 2018 meet as of June 26. He has hit the board in all four career starts, finishing third in his debut last summer at Saratoga and then second to Dixie Moon in the Cup and Saucer Stakes in October 2017 before taking a nearly seven-month break and returning to break his maiden by a neck on May 4 at Woodbine. In his most recent start, he took a lead in early stretch of the Tale of the Cat Stakes going 1 1/16 miles on turf at Monmouth Park, but lost that advantage in the final strides to finish second. Along with his stablemate and one or two other up-and-coming horses, this son of leading sire Tapit looms as a solid longshot play in the Queen’s Plate if he takes the next step in development on Saturday – and attracting the reigning Eclipse Award-winning jockey Jose Ortiz is notable, to say the least. His dam (mother) Strike Softly earned over $600,000 in her career and won two stakes races at Woodbine. Notable achievements and interesting facts: This inexperienced but promising colt joins Real Dude as Queen’s Plate starters for Frank Stronach, and he enters the classic off of two consecutive impressive wins at Woodbine. He broke his maiden on April 22 by 5 ½ lengths on Tapeta (his second career start) and then backed that performance up with a 1 ¼-length win on turf in late May. Those wins came at five and seven furlongs, respectively, which means that he’ll have to extend his precocious talent to the Queen’s Plate’s classic mile-and-a-quarter distance, but his dam’s (mother’s) pedigree offers some encouragement as she is a daughter of Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper and a relative of 2000 Preakness Stakes winner Red Bullet. Jockey Gary Boulanger was aboard Silent Poet on both of his wins, and ranks fourth in the Woodbine earnings standings and third in wins as of June 26. Both of those races were held at 1 1/16 miles, giving him route experience he’ll need as a closer in a full Queen’s Plate field. He is a product of Stronach’s accomplished Adena Springs breeding program as a son of Stronach’s 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper and dam (mother) Ginger Brew, who finished second in the 2008 Queen’s Plate for the Canadian business magnate and racing titan. Stronach is a nine-time Sovereign Award winner as Canada’s leading owner (and the 2008 Eclipse Award winner in that category in the U.S.) and has won the Sovereign Award as leading breeder 12 times, including in 2017. Trainer Catherine Day Phillips currently ranks fourth in earnings at Woodbine’s meet, and jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva ranks second in that category and in wins. Da Silva finished as Woodbine’s leading jockey by wins from 2015-2017, and he won back-to-back runnings of the Queen’s Plate in 2009 (Eye of the Leopard) and 2010 (Big Red Mike). In his first start since winning his maiden impressively at Keeneland, he stalked the pace and made a late rally to just miss second by a head. Rafael Hernandez, currently the leading jockey at Woodbine in both wins and earnings, retains the mount in the Queen’s Plate – a good sign. He won the 2015 Queen’s Plate aboard Shaman Ghost. Say the Word is a product of the legendary Sam-Son Farm breeding program, one that has accumulated nine Sovereign Awards (along with 11 Sovereign Awards as leading owner), and his dam’s (mother’s) family tree includes Sam-Son legends such as Dance Smartly, Dancethruthedawn, and Smart Strike. Shipped to Woodbine for the 1 1/8-mile Plate Trial Stakes, he defeated Queen’s Plate foes Rose’s Vision and Aheadbyacentury with an impressive show of determination, drawing clear from a pressing Rose’s Vision in the final sixteenth to win by 1 ¾ lengths. Patrick Husbands, a seven-time leading rider by wins at Woodbine, should keep his mount close to the early lead in the Queen’s Plate, and although Telekinesis shows both speed and stamina influences in his dam’s (mother’s) pedigree, this colt should have enough of a foundation to carry his speed an extra furlong in Saturday’s classic. Pawnbroker’s pedigree is also solid from a stamina and surface standpoint, as he’s a son of multiple champion Gio Ponti, who excelled on turf and on artificial surfaces, and his dam (mother) is a daughter of Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Alphabet Soup. He’ll need racing luck as a closer and will have to make a big jump in terms of speed figures to contend, but this colt looms as an intriguing longshot option in the Queen’s Plate.

That level of competition is a far cry from what he’ll face in the Queen’s Plate, however. Caribbean-born jockey Jalon Samuel was aboard the Ramseys-owned, Maker-trained Boyhood Dream in the recent Plate Trial Stakes and rode the Ramseys’ 2016 Queen’s Plate winner Sir Dudley Digges to victory in this spring’s Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup down south in the tropics before moving his tack permanently to Woodbine.

He began his career last summer at Saratoga with a solid third-place effort, and then finished sixth, fifth, and second in his remaining 2017 starts before breaking his maiden in his first start at 3 on Gulfstream Park’s turf course in January. Since then, he’s raced competitively in three starts, finishing fifth in two turf stakes races and then third in a May allowance optional claiming race won by Queen’s Plate foe Cooler Mike. Last year, he also finished behind Dixie Moon in the Cup and Saucer Stakes and Aheadbyacentury in the Coronation Futurity Stakes, both at Woodbine, so this colt needs to improve to get to the winner’s circle against this deep field. Jockey Florent Geroux is currently leading all North American riders in earnings and has had success teaming with Casse in recent years. A 10-time Sovereign Award winner, Casse finished first in wins at Woodbine’s 2002 meet and then every year from 2007-2016. He’s currently atop the standings in both earnings and wins as of June 26. Casse has one Queen’s Plate win on his résumé – the filly Lexie Lou in 2014. Chiefswood Stable, 2017 recipient of the Sovereign Award as Canada’s leading owner, won the 2004 Queen’s Plate with Niigon – the damsire (maternal grandfather) of Neepawa – and finished second with Tiz a Slam last year.

Both of his career wins came as a juvenile last fall, however. He’s got a good stamina pedigree on his dam’s (mother’s) side as a relative of champion filly Davona Dale and Stephen Foster Handicap winner Seek Gold, and he’s shown the ability to make a good closing rally in the stretch, but may have to weave through heavy traffic in this full field to hit the board. Having jockey Luis Contreras aboard is a major plus. Contreras won last year’s Queen’s Plate aboard the filly Holy Helena and also won on Inglorious in 2011. The native of Mexico was Woodbine’s leading jockey in wins from 2011-2013 and finished second in that category from 2014-2017.

Desde entonces, ha estado trabajando bastante bien en Woodbine, y el jinete Joel Rosario, de buena mano, viene desde New York para firmar la monta. Sus triunfos fueron como juvenil el pasado otoño, sin embargo. El Plate Trial fue su segunda carrera sobre la pista sintética de Woodbine y fue un gran progreso sobre su sexto puesto en el Grado 3 Marine Stakes.
