Diversify will seek a second consecutive Jockey Club Gold Cup win this Saturday. (Eclipse Sportswire)
Saturday’s $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes at Belmont Park is one of the most prestigious races in the sport, held for the 100th time this year, and it’s a Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” qualifying race for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 3. Eight Thoroughbreds are entered in the 1 ¼-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup, held around one sweeping turn on Belmont’s “Big Sandy” main dirt track. Diversify, last year’s Jockey Club Gold Cup winner, returns for a repeat bid but will be tested by strong challengers Mendelssohn, Gronkowski, and Thunder Snow. Post time is set for 5:50 p.m. ET and the race will be televised during NYRA’s “Belmont Park Live” broadcast airing on MSG+ and on TVG.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: Opposite to Gronkowski, this European-turned-American-based racehorse rebounded in a big way in the Travers Stakes, setting a solid pace and finishing second to Catholic Boy at 13.60-1 odds to put some shine back on his reputation after he ran last of 20 in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve and then a distant third as the 3-2 favorite in the June 7 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont. Despite his good effort in the Travers, there are still legitimate concerns about his ability to carry his speed at a classic distance on dirt against top North American horses, and he’ll have to contend with the best route-speed racehorse currently in training, Diversify, in Saturday’s Jockey Club Gold Cup. There is a 15-point gap between his top dirt Equibase Speed Figure of 104 and Diversify’s best figure of 119, which does not bode well for his win chances on Saturday, but this elite-pedigreed, $3 million purchase should have a big say in how the race shape develops.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: A fan favorite, one-eyed Patch is still seeking a breakthrough graded stakes win after first gaining notice a year and a half ago on the Triple Crown trail. In four starts this year, he’s finished first in a May allowance at Belmont, seventh in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs, third in the Alydar Stakes at Saratoga, and a mild-rallying fifth in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets, also at the Spa. His Stephen Foster showing may be a toss-out due to the extreme heat that evening in Louisville, but even so, he’s not displayed the talent level to win a Grade 1 race through the course of his career, and would need horses such as Diversify, Thunder Snow, and Mendelssohn to all put forth subpar efforts in the Jockey Club Gold Cup to enhance his own chances at reaching the winner’s circle. That being said, he has a great pedigree for 1 ¼ miles and could pass tiring horses to fill out the exacta or, more likely, the trifecta, on Saturday. Todd Pletcher has not won the Jockey Club Gold Cup; he trained runner-up Keen Ice last year.

He began the streak with a 4 ½-length score in a starter allowance at Churchill Downs back in June and then took a seven-furlong allowance and a 6 ½-furlong allowance optional claiming race during Saratoga’s meet. In his only route start this year, he finished a decent third behind dead-heat winners in a 1 1/16-mile starter allowance at Churchill Downs after setting the early pace. That race may offer a clue as to his connections’ strategy on Saturday, as he could serve as a possible early pace challenger against far more accomplished front-runners Diversify and Mendelssohn. He’s put together three consecutive Equibase Speed Figures over 100 in his career-best winning streak and is certainly an admirable, hard-trying racehorse, but the Jockey Club Gold Cup is a huge step up in class for a horse that was competing in claiming races at Hawthorne Race Course less than a year ago. He does retain the services of Hall of Famer Javier Castellano after the elite jockey piloted him in his recent Saratoga win. Castellano won the 2006 Jockey Club Gold Cup with Bernardini.

In last fall’s Jockey Club Gold Cup, he ascended from a solid stakes winner against fellow New York-breds to a Grade 1-caliber racehorse with a pacesetting one-length win. Following that race, he shipped to Churchill Downs and finished a disappointing fourth in the Clark Handicap, and then returned for his 5-year-old season and faded badly in the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic in West Virginia, finishing last of seven. That oddly-configured, three-turn 1 1/8-mile race was a toss-out, however, and since then he’s returned to the Empire State and posted three consecutive wins, the most recent two being blowouts in the Grade 2 Suburban Stakes at Belmont and the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga. This gelding loves Belmont, carrying a 6-2-0 record from eight starts, and if left alone on the lead he is a major threat to run away from his seven opponents on Saturday. There does appear to be at least one high-class early speed horse to challenge him in Mendelssohn, however, and Thunder Snow has also shown the ability to either set the pace or press it against top-class competition. Diversify faces a tough test in his Jockey Club Gold Cup repeat bid, but the current third-ranked horse in the NTRA top Thoroughbreds poll should be tough to topple. Irad Ortiz Jr. was aboard Diversify for his win in this race last year.

Look for Belmont-based jockey Manny Franco to keep him back and make one late run during the final quarter-mile, with the hopes of scoring another decent payday via a third- or fourth-place finish (he needs less than $60,000 to pass the $1 million mark for his career). He did finish four lengths behind Diversify and only a half-length behind Mind Your Biscuits in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes two starts ago, arguably his best career performance aside from the Excelsior, and based on that deserves to be included in trifecta and superfecta tickets.

In his only prior U.S. start, he bucked immediately after leaving the gate in the 2017 Kentucky Derby and was pulled up by Christophe Soumillon, necessitating a trip back to Europe where he won one of his next five starts, all on turf. He began his 4-year-old campaign back at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai – where he had won the United Arab Emirates Derby Sponsored by the Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group in 2017 – and once again showed an affinity for the dirt track at owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s racecourse. He won one out of three prep races for the 2018 Dubai World Cup Presented by Emirates Airline and finished second in the other two before romping in the international showcase event on March 31, defeating top-class U.S. horse West Coast by 5 ¾ lengths. (West Coast makes his first start since the Dubai World Cup later Saturday in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita Park.) Thunder Snow then made another turf start on Aug. 22 in England’s Juddmonte International Stakes and retreated to finish last after setting the pace, and now he returns to dirt in hopes of securing an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He’s proven at this distance and has a versatile running style, capable of setting the pace or coming from off of it, and it will be interesting to see what strategy elite international jockey Soumillon employs in the early stages of the Jockey Club Gold Cup, where Diversify and Mendelssohn figure to jump out to an early lead. He has one posted workout at Belmont Park, a maintenance breeze over the mud on Sept. 26, and gets Lasix for the first time since the Kentucky Derby. Based on his past stakes performances, he’s arguably the best horse in the field, and if he can circle back to his Dubai World Cup form and avoid a taxing pace duel he’ll be very tough to defeat.
