The $6 million Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, set for Saturday, Nov. 3, at approximately 5:44 p.m. ET, caps off two days of elite competition at the 2018 World Championships by bringing the best longer-distance dirt horses in the world together in a race that will have an impact on the year-end Eclipse Awards – if not for Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male, both nearly shoo-in awards for Justify, then certainly for champion older dirt male.
This year’s Classic, which is held at historic Churchill Downs and will be televised live on NBC, is headlined by Accelerate, who enters the 1 ¼-mile Classic off of three consecutive Grade 1 wins in California. Accelerate is set to face a strong group of challengers, including last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic third-place finisher West Coast, foreign-based Group 1 winners Thunder Snow and Roaring Lion, and a group of talented 3-year-olds led by Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets winner Catholic Boy, Pennsylvania Derby winner McKinzie, and UAE Derby winner and Travers runner-up Mendelssohn.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This $8.5 million earner appeared to have the Jockey Club Gold Cup won on Sept. 29 in his first U.S. start since being pulled up in the 2017 Kentucky Derby after bucking out of the gate. He put away a game Mendelssohn in the final sixteenth of Belmont’s historic mile and a quarter race, only to be edged by a charging Discreet Lover by a neck at the finish. Thunder Snow has since shipped to Churchill and put in a trio of maintenance works, and he should be among the top betting choices in Saturday’s Classic based on his past success on dirt and his ability to handle 1 ¼ miles. The versatile Irish-bred colt has one win and two seconds at that distance, his win coming earlier this year when he easily defeated fellow Classic combatant West Coast by 5 ¾ lengths in the Group 1 Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline at Meydan Racecourse. The 114 Equibase Speed Figure he earned in the Jockey Club Gold Cup is significantly below the best figures earned by Accelerate and West Coast, but his best Timeform speed figures at Meydan place him with those contenders as a logical win candidate. Look for jockey Christophe Soumillon to settle Thunder Snow in fourth or fifth through the backstretch after what he hopes will be a good break from the inside post, before moving him up in the far turn. He’s a “make one run” type of racehorse and could be vulnerable to closers if he moves too soon, as happened in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: Saeed bin Suroor, Godolphin’s longtime stable trainer, has been represented by 51 starters at the World Championships, with three winners. His best finish in the Classic from eight starters came in 2001, when Godolphin’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sakhee yielded to Tiznow by a nose in one of the most exciting Breeders’ Cup races ever. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum co-owned 2008 Classic winner Raven’s Pass through his Darley Stable (now Godolphin Racing). He also has 13 other Breeders’ Cup wins as sole owner or co-owner. Soumillon has one win from nine prior mounts in the Breeders’ Cup, and this is his first start in the Classic.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This elite European invader has been pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Classic by trainer John Gosden to separate him from Gosden’s superstar filly Enable, who is headed to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf and will probably be the shortest-priced horse in the two-day World Championships. Roaring Lion is 4-for-4 when racing in contests at or close to 1 ¼ miles and ships to Louisville on a four-race Group 1 winning streak. Obviously, the main question regarding his chance of winning the Classic boils down to track surface – he’s an elite turf horse, but has never raced on dirt before. Eleven of his 12 starts have come on grass, and one on Kempton Park’s artificial main track – a six-length win in September 2017. If he can handle the surface switch, he has a class advantage over most of the Classic field and looms as a leading win candidate given his proven stamina and stalking running style. Breeders’ Cup Stats: Gosden won the 2008 Classic with 3-year-old Raven’s Pass on what was then an artificial-surface main track at Santa Anita Park. The longtime leading international trainer has three other Breeders’ Cup wins dating back to Royal Heroine’s victory in the inaugural running of the Mile in 1984. Sheikh Fahad Al Thani’s Qatar Racing group will be making its first appearance in the Classic, as will Qatar Racing’s jockey, Oisin Murphy.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This 3-year-old ridgling has had arguably the best season among his age group outside of Triple Crown winner Justify, although Good Magic supporters might protest. He has won three races in a row heading into the Breeders’ Cup, the last two at the Classic’s mile-and-a-quarter distance. In his most recent start, he returned to dirt for the first time since an uncharacteristically poor performance in April’s Xpressbet Florida Derby and posted a dominant four-length win over Mendelssohn in the Aug. 25 Runhappy Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets. He got a perfect trip in that race, but he also has a versatile running style that gives him a chance nearly every time he competes. His Equibase Speed Figures are lower than the top tier of candidates in the Classic, however, and that includes fellow 3-year-old McKinzie.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: Jonathan Thomas made his Breeders’ Cup debut as a trainer last year with Catholic Boy, who finished a solid fourth in the Juvenile Turf at Del Mar won by Mendelssohn. Catholic Boy’s co-owner Robert LaPenta won the 2007 Juvenile with War Pass. Hall of Famer Javier Castellano has eight Breeders’ Cup wins from an even 100 starters heading into this year, including a Classic win with Ghostzapper in 2004. He’s also finished second in the Classic once and third three times, including aboard West Coast last year.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: This fan favorite is on the outside looking in for the Classic as of midday Oct. 26 but could make the starting gate if, as expected, City of Light runs in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. He’s a grinding closer and usually gives a good effort in his races, but has so far been unable to break through against Grade 1 competition. Four of his six career wins have come at his home track of Gulfstream Park, and in fact he hasn’t won outside of south Florida since he turned 3 in 2017. Still, he finished a good second in last year’s 1 ¼-mile Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets behind West Coast, and showed that he was rounding back into top form in his most recent start, when he was runner-up to Yoshida in the 1 1/8-mile Woodward Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets. In his only prior start at Churchill Downs, Gunnevera finished a rough-trip seventh in the 2017 Kentucky Derby. He could be very well trailing the field through the backstretch of the Classic if he draws in, and he’ll need a fast pace up front and a skillful ride from his jockey to enhance his chances of hitting the board at what should be long odds.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: South Florida trainer Antonio Sano took Margoth-owned Gunnevera to last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic and finished fifth. His only other Breeders’ Cup horse took fourth in the 2013 Juvenile Turf. Irad Ortiz Jr. has already made 28 Breeders’ Cup starts in his young and accomplished career, with three wins. He finished fourth aboard Keen Ice in the 2015 Classic, one of his two starts in the race.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: After several attempts at securing a graded stakes win against the best of his age group, Lone Sailor broke through with a rallying nose win in the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park on Sept. 30, which was his first victory in over a year and only the second of his career. That record should make him one of the longest shots in the Breeders’ Cup Classic field, but on the positive side, he has shown enough stamina to suggest that he should be able to handle 1 ¼ miles. In his only start at that distance, he encountered some midrace traffic trouble but still kept running in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve to finish eighth. He also put in decent efforts in the Preakness Stakes (fifth) and betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes (third), but his best performances have come against 3-year-olds in Grade 2 or 3 stakes, and that certainly won’t be enough to win the $6 million Classic. Look for him to trail the field along with Discreet Lover and Yoshida, both of whom are faster, and make one late run in the stretch.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: Lone Sailor will be the second Breeders’ Cup starter for Gayle Benson’s G M B Racing. Tom Amoss has sent 10 starters to the Breeders’ Cup and has finished third twice, with Heritage of Gold in the 1999 and 2000 Distaffs. This will be jockey James Graham’s first appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and his ninth in the World Championships overall. He finished second in the 2011 Turf Sprint aboard Country Day.

Notable achievements and interesting facts: It may be hard to remember, but McKinzie was Bob Baffert’s leading Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve contender at the start of 2018. This talented, well-bred colt had flashed enticing potential in his first two starts as a 3-year-old, winning the Grade 3 Sham Stakes and then finishing first in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes in March before being disqualified for late bumping. Unfortunately, he was then taken off of the Kentucky Derby trail with a hind leg injury just as Justify began to make his march toward Triple Crown glory. The always-patient Baffert brought McKinzie back in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 22, and he showed little rust in defeating Axelrod by 1 ¾ lengths and earning an impressive 114 Equibase Speed Figure off of the layoff. He’ll need to improve on that effort to win against a tough field on Saturday, but he’s eligible to do just that, and he looms as a major pace factor in the Classic at the very least.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: Hall of Famer Baffert has been represented by 108 Breeders’ Cup starters, with 14 winners, and he’s the all-time leading money earner among trainers at the World Championships with over $27.6 million. He has won three out of the past four Classics – with Bayern (2014), American Pharoah (2015), and Arrogate (2016). Two of Baffert’s Breeders’ Cup wins came with sprint sensation Midnight Lute, owned by his longtime friends Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman. Baffert also won the 1992 Sprint – his first Breeders’ Cup win – with Thirty Slews, co-owned by Pegram, and the 1998 Juvenile Fillies with Pegram-owned Silverbulletday. The trio of Watson, Pegram, and Weitman have two Breeders’ Cup wins to their credit, both by Baffert-trained Secret Circle, who won the 2011 Juvenile Sprint and the 2013 Sprint. “Big Money” Mike Smith leads all jockeys in Breeders’ Cup wins, with 26 from 135 starters. He also is the earnings leader with over $35.8 million. Smith has won the Classic four times – with Skip Away in 1997, Zenyatta in 2009, Drosselmeyer in 2011, and Arrogate in 2016. He’s also finished second three times – most memorably in Zenyatta’s final race in 2010 – and third twice.

Through 12 career starts, he’s never run a bad race, and his only third-place finish came in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, when he was steadied early. He’s winless this year at age 4, but has three straight runner-up finishes – to Gun Runner in the Pegasus World Cup, to Thunder Snow in the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline, and to Accelerate in the Awesome Again Stakes on Sept. 29. The Awesome Again was his first start since the Dubai World Cup back in March, and it should set him up perfectly for an improved effort in the Classic that could place him in the winner’s circle. West Coast set the pace in his dominant Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets win in 2017 – his only win in three starts at 1 ¼ miles – but otherwise prefers to press the pace or stalk, and that’s historically been a good running style for the Classic, as Mike Curry notes in his analysis of prior editions.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: Baffert’s dominant Breeders’ Cup history is discussed in McKinzie’s profile. Gary and Mary West have had eight Breeders’ Cup starters, with New Year’s Day’s win in the 2013 Juvenile and West Coast’s third-place finish in last year’s Classic their best showings. Hall of Famer John Velazquez has 15 prior Breeders’ Cup wins from 168 starters. He’s had 17 prior mounts in the Classic and finished second three times.

But in his start prior to that, Pavel unleashed a dominant performance in the 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs on June 16, winning by 3 ¾ lengths and earning a career-best-tying 117 Equibase Speed Figure. A note of caution: he’s raced five times at the Classic’s mile and a quarter distance and has been soundly defeated in four of those starts. But if he can approach his Stephen Foster Handicap form on Saturday, his stalking running style should put him in a good spot in the race to get first jump on the pacesetters in early stretch.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: Doug O’Neill has trained 47 Breeders’ Cup starters, with five winners. His best Classic finish among four starters was fifth with Richard’s Kid in 2012. Reddam has three Breeders’ Cup wins as sole or co-owner, but none in the Classic. Mario Gutierrez has proven big-race experience under the twin spires, winning two Kentucky Derbys for Reddam and O’Neill. He has two Breeders’ Cup wins and one second from 24 mounts, and finished 10th aboard Pavel in the Classic last year at Del Mar.

Since then, he ran a distant third in the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park but then put forth two game efforts in back-to-back mile and a quarter races – second in the Runhappy Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets and third after pressing a swift pace in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. When on his game, Mendelssohn has good cruising speed and he should be one of the main pace factors in the Classic. Whether he has enough stamina to remain in contention during the last furlong of the Classic is another question. In his career-best race, the Group 2 UAE Derby Sponsored by Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group, he took control of the pace early and was never really challenged. That doesn’t figure to be the case on Saturday, with Accelerate, West Coast, and McKinzie in the mix.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: Coolmore stable trainer Aidan O’Brien has conditioned 124 Breeders’ Cup starters, with 12 wins. He has hit the board three times in the Classic. Coolmore’s “Iron Horse,” Giant’s Causeway, finished second by a neck to Tiznow in 2000 and went on to become a leading sire. Henrythenavigator finished second in 2008 and Declaration of War a close third in 2013. The trio of Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick Smith have a Breeders’ Cup history largely mirrored by O’Brien, with consistent success in the World Championships but, as of yet, no wins in the Classic. Ryan Moore has had 56 mounts in the Breeders’ Cup and nine wins, including with Mendelssohn in last year’s Juvenile Turf. His best Classic finish from four mounts came in 2011, when he finished sixth.

He’s reunited with Jose Ortiz, who was aboard for his Grade 1 turf win, for the Classic, and will need a pace scenario and a good trip similar to the Woodward in order to set up his kick. Yoshida had a good initial workout over Churchill’s main track on Oct. 22, and is definitely worth considering for exacta and trifecta tickets, although he’ll need to muster a career-best effort to win on Saturday.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: Hall of Famer Bill Mott has trained 95 Breeders’ Cup starters, with 10 winners. He’s won the Classic twice, with the legendary Cigar in 1995 and with WinStar Farm-owned Drosselmeyer in 2011, the latter concluding the most recent Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs. He’s also finished third three times in the Classic. Reigning Eclipse Award-winning jockey Jose Ortiz has two Breeders’ Cup wins from 28 starters. He finished fourth aboard War Story in last year’s Classic, his first mount in the race.

He has been one of the best dirt sprinters in the world for the past couple of years, but in his last two races has shown that he can extend that ability around two turns. After winning the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen Sponsored by Gulf News for the second consecutive year in March, Mind Your Biscuits lost the Runhappy Metropolitan Handicap by a nose and then targeted a pair of 1 1/8-mile races. He closed well but had too much ground to make up behind runaway winner Diversify in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, but then romped by 4 ¾ lengths in the Grade 3 Lukas Classic Stakes on Sept. 29 at Churchill Downs, earning a career-best 123 Equibase Speed Figure. His pedigree may built for speed, and he’ll be facing a far tougher field in the Breeders’ Cup Classic than he did in the Lukas Classic, but he’s an ultra-consistent horse who should be closing fast in the stretch from somewhere in midpack if the pace scenario works in his favor.
Breeders’ Cup Stats: Chad Summers found success in his very first Breeders’ Cup last year as a trainer at Del Mar with Mind Your Biscuits’ third-place Sprint finish. He and several from the current ownership group also earned a nice payday in 2016 when Mind Your Biscuits finished second via disqualification in the Sprint at Santa Anita Park, though he did not train Mind Your Biscuits at that time. Sol Kumin’s entity Head of Plains Partners was co-owner of 2015 Sprint winner Wavell Avenue. This will be young jockey Tyler Gaffalione’s third Breeders’ Cup appearance, and first in the Classic.

Breeders’ Cup Stats: Michael McCarthy will be making his first appearance at the World Championships this year with a loaded stable that includes Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile contender City of Light. Notable achievements and interesting facts: This hard-trying horse brings one of the best storylines into the 2018 Breeders’ Cup, as owner and trainer Uriah St. Lewis will be represented by the first graded stakes winner in his 30-year career at the World Championships. On Sept. 29, Discreet Lover won the 1 ¼-mile, Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup – one of the most tradition-rich stakes in North America – by closing from from the clouds to edge Thunder Snow by a neck, triggering a joyous celebration in the Belmont Park winner’s circle by St. Lewis, his family, and friends. Discreet Lover had enjoyed a certain amount of regional success in tracks up and down the Atlantic coast prior to this year, but stepped up his game with a Grade 3 win at Aqueduct in April before competing in Grade 1 and Grade 2 races over the summer, posting two third-place finishes. A one-dimensional closer, he capitalized on a swift pace in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and will need to get another one just as fast, or faster, in the Breeders’ Cup Classic against a field that includes Gold Cup runner-up Thunder Snow and third-place Mendelssohn.

He also is versatile enough to either set the pace or lay just off of it, and the latter strategy may be preferred on Nov. 3 as he drew the far outside post in a full field of 14. Breeders’ Cup Stats: Trainer John Sadler has yet to win a Breeders’ Cup race with 41 prior starters. He has finished second three times, including Stellar Wind’s razor-thin neck loss to Stopchargingmaria in the 2015 Longines Distaff, and third seven times, including with Accelerate in the 2016 Dirt Mile. All of Hronis Racing’s 12 Breeders’ Cup starters have been trained by Sadler, including Stellar Wind. Joel Rosario has 93 prior starters in the World Championships, with six wins. Rosario’s best Classic finish from six starters came in 2012, when Flat Out finished third.
