Making the Grade, which will run through the 2017 Belmont Stakes, focuses on the winners or top performers of the big races, usually from the previous weekend, who could impact the Triple Crown. We’ll be taking a close look at impressive winners and evaluating their chances to win classic races based upon ability, running style, connections (owner, trainer, jockey) and pedigree.

This week we take a closer look at Irish War Cry, winner of the $350,000 Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes on Feb. 4 at Gulfstream Park.

The return of champion and Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Classic Empire garnered the vast majority of the headlines leading up to the Holy Bull Stakes, but Irish War Cry stepped onto center stage on the Triple Crown trail and stole the spotlight with a dominant victory. Let’s examine this talented, lightly raced colt’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands chances after he earned 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard.

Kentucky Derby Points: 10 (Ranked No. 8)

Ability: Three races into his career, three triple-digit Equibase Speed Figures for Irish War Cry, including a career-best 110 for beating Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes winner Gunnevera by 3 ¾ lengths in the Holy Bull Stakes, with champion Classic Empire another five lengths back. The Holy Bull ranks as the top breakout performance thus far on the 2017 Triple Crown trail.

Irish War Cry flashed ability from his first start, closing from eight lengths back in a three-quarter-mile sprint and powering clear to win by 4 ½ lengths in November at Laurel Park. He followed with a hard-fought win in the seven-eighths of a mile Marylander Stakes, setting the pace and then holding off O Dionysus by a nose. He earned a 102 Equibase Speed Figure for both races.

His debut was incredibly impressive as he broke a bit slowly from the far outside, raced wide the entire trip and then just inhaled the opposition on the turn with a visually impressive rally. He still had enough stamina left to put away the determined favorite in the stretch while racing a bit greenly, basically overmatching the runner-up with superior talent.

At the time, I was not as impressed with the Marylander Stakes on Dec. 31. I thought he’d overwhelm the field as the 3-10 favorite but had to fight through the stretch to prevail. In hindsight, the battle probably was a great learning experience and test of will, and the third-place finisher was 10 lengths behind the top two.

Any seeds of doubt were erased by the Holy Bull, when Irish War Cry went right to the front, set the pace through a measured half-mile in :47.92 and finished strong with a final sixteenth of a mile in 6.15 seconds. He showed just a touch of immaturity again in the stretch when jockey Joel Rosario tried to get him to switch leads, but when he did he unleashed an explosive burst. There is still room for growth and improvement from Irish War Cry, which is very exciting.

Running style: Irish War Cry has plenty of natural speed, and sometimes when he races it looks like the jockey is just aboard for the ride. He showed in his debut that he can come from off the pace, and in the Holy Bull he seized command when there were no early challengers and settled comfortably into a nice, easy rhythm. There is some versatility here that bodes well as races get longer and the field size increases, but the key is Irish War Cry has the natural speed to gain tactical position.

Connections: Irish War Cry is owned and bred by Isabelle de Tomaso, whose story I could not do justice in just a few sentences. Fortunately, a friend and former colleague at Thoroughbred Times, Sid Fernando, wrote a terrific blog about New Jersey-bred Irish War Cry’s owner, a woman who grew up riding horses and was a race car driver in the 1950s. De Tomaso is a daughter of Amory L. Haskell, for whom the Haskell Invitational Stakes at Monmouth Park is named. De Tomaso bred Irish War Cry’s dam (mother), Irish Sovereign; grandam (maternal grandmother), Irish Genius; and third dam (maternal great-grandmother), Irish Trip, a stakes winner in Italy.

Graham Motion trains Irish War Cry. Motion has had four starters in the Kentucky Derby and won the race in 2011 with Animal Kingdom, that year’s champion 3-year-old male and the 2013 Dubai World Cup winner.

Based at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland, Motion comes from a family of horsemen. His father, Michael, was a successful bloodstock agent, and his mother, Jo, was an amateur rider and assistant trainer. Motion, who served as an assistant to Hall of Famer Jonathan Sheppard, Jonathan Pease and Bernie Bond, won the Breeders’ Cup Turf twice with Better Talk Now (2004) and champion Main Sequence (2014), and won the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf in 2010 with Shared Account.

Joel Rosario rode Irish War Cry for the first time in the Holy Bull; Feargal Lynch rode the Curlin colt for his first two starts.

Pedigree: Irish War Cry is from the fifth crop of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, who very quickly has established himself as one of the top sources of stamina among U.S. stallions. Curlin won the Preakness and Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2007 and the Dubai World Cup in 2008. He won 11 of 16 races and earned more than $10.5 million in a Hall of Fame career.

A fast powerhouse of a racehorse, Curlin has likewise gotten out of the starting gate exceptionally well in his second career. He’s already sired a Belmont Stakes winner (Palace Malice, 2013), a Preakness Stakes winner (Exaggerator, 2016) and a Travers Stakes winner (Keen Ice, 2015) as well as champion Stellar Wind and Grade 1 winners Curalina, Connect and Off the Tracks. Curlin ranked second on the 2016 general sire list behind only Tapit. The majority of his top runners possess both speed and the ability to carry it a long way, which bodes well for Irish War Cry.

On the bottom half of Irish War Cry’s pedigree, you have to dig a little deeper to find an abundance of class and both his dam, Irish Sovereign, and grandam, Irish Genius, never won a race longer than three-quarters of a mile, which is a concern.

Irish War Cry was outstanding in the Holy Bull and looks like he has room to improve. He’s also in capable hands and by the right sire to spark Derby dreams. Irish War Cry should be at or near the top of most Kentucky Derby lists, which shows just how far he’s come since his debut on Nov. 11.
