With the 2016 Triple Crown season in the rearview mirror, the Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In season is gearing up. While international Win and You’re In races for this year’s event have been taking place since January, the first U.S. race of the year was the June 4 Shoemaker Mile, with two others running on the undercard of the Belmont Stakes.

In the first Getting to Know piece of the year we are focusing on Cavorting, winner of the $1-million Ogden Phipps Stakes and the first U.S.-based filly to earn a spot in the $2-million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff on November 4.

Race Résumé

Proving from the beginning that she was talented, Cavorting won her debut in July of her 2-year-old season by an easy 11 lengths. She stepped up in class in her next out when she added the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes to her resume by 3 ¼ lengths.

After going off form in her next two starts, Cavorting stepped back up to the form shown early in her 2-year-old campaign. She beat stakes winner Enchanting Lady by three-quarters of a length in the Jersey Girl Stakes, improving by 10 points off her previous best Equibase speed figure to 106.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin stepped her back up to Grade 1 company after that and she rewarded him with a victory in the Test Stakes before reeling off a Grade 2 victory by three lengths in her next start.

Cavorting lined up in the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland in late October 2015. Closing from the back of the pack, the filly made up quite a bit of ground to finish a good fourth in the race. Making her first trip to California, Cavorting ended 2015 with a third-place finish in the La Brea over the same track the 2016 Breeders’ Cup will be held on.

After a nearly four-month break, Cavorting made her 2016 debut in the Grade 3 Distaff Handicap where she finished second to Grade 2 winner Paulassilverlining. But Cavorting proved that the finish was just a result of needing the run in her next start.

Stretching out to a mile for the first time since early last year when she finished ninth in the Davona Dale, the added distance is obviously not a problem for the filly at 4 years old. She upped her best Equibase speed figure to a 109 in the race when winning the Ruffian Stakes by five lengths.

That brings us to the Ogden Phipps where she ran at 1 1/16 miles for the first time.

Continuing its tradition of being one of the most competitive races of the year, the Ogden Phipps attracted a field of seven with five of those being Grade 1 winners.

Dropping back to second-last in front of only Unbridled Forever in the early stages of the race, Cavorting was last as the field entered the turn but that didn’t last long. Going the widest of any horse in the race, it wasn’t long before she was even with the leaders before sweeping past them into the stretch. With Florent Geroux aboard for the first time, she won in a time of 1:40.14 by 2 ½ lengths.

2016 OGDEN PHIPPS

The Ogden Phipps victory improved her best Equibase figure to 110, seven points behind older female dirt figure leader Penwith.

The good thing about Cavorting is that while she has been farther back position-wise in her races, she can still stay close to the pace so she isn’t stuck with the worries of a closer not getting the pace or a front runner not being able to settle.

She hasn’t yet run at the 1 1/8 mile distance of the Distaff but her run in the Phipps didn’t give any indication that she can’t get the extra half-furlong needed for the race.

Pedigree

Cavorting’s pedigree is a mix of speed and stamina, which explains why she has been able to extend her success as a sprinter into success as a router.

The 4-year-old is by Bernardini, who has sired winners of the Travers and Woodward among others. Bernardini also won up to 1 ¼ miles with a second-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic so he obviously had stamina himself. His sire, A.P. Indy, was the winner of the 1992 Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic so stamina really shouldn’t be a problem from his side.

Cavorting is out of Grade 2 winner Promenade Girl, who was third in the Ogden Phipps in 2007. Like her daughter, Promenade Girl was dangerous at both sprints and routes winning from six furlongs to 1 1/8 miles with her graded stakes victory coming at 1 1/16 miles.

Promenade Girl is also the dam of winning 2-year-old Thirstforlife, who was stakes placed in his first start after walking out of the gate. Thirstforlife broke his maiden exactly seven days before his half-sister won the Ogden Phipps and looks like he may give his dam a second representative at the Breeders’ Cup if he keeps going this way.

Promenade Girl is by Carson City, who is known as a speedier sire so it makes sense that his daughter and granddaughter are successful sprinters. But her dam, Promenade Colony brings in more of the stamina seen in their success.

Promenade Colony won her only race at a mile and is by the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winning stallion Pleasant Colony, who was also third in the Belmont. Promenade Colony has two stakes-winning daughters, with two stakes-winners from those daughters. Cavorting’s third dam, Dance Review, herself has nine stakes winners to her credit, with some of those wins coming in route races.

While it is too early to tell what kind of pace Cavorting will run into in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, the filly has taken big steps toward convincing her connections she will be fine at the distance with her last two races.

McLaughlin hasn’t said what the next target will be for the Bernardini daughter but told NYRA that going two turns at Saratoga is on her radar.

Comenzando a Saber de Cavorting

Resumen de Campaña

Probando desde sus inicios que ella era talentosa, Cavorting ganó en su debut en Julio cuando comenzaba su temporada de dosañera por unos cómodos 11 cuerpos. Dio un paso hacia arriba en cuanto a categoría cuando ella añadió a su palmarés el Grado 2 Adirondack Stakes, ganándolo por 3 ¼ cuerpos.

Después de decaer en su forma en sus siguientes dos salidas, Cavorting recuperó el mejor de sus estados, aquellos exhibidos tempranamente en su campaña como dosañera. Derrotó a la ganadora clásica Enchanting Lady por tres cuartos de cuerpo en el Jersey Girl Stakes, mejorando en 10 puntos su previa mejor Figura Equibase de Velocidad, hasta un106.

Cavorting se alineó en el TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint de Keeneland a finales de Octubre del 2015. Rezagándose hasta el penúltimo puesto solamente delante de Unbridled Forever en los tramos iniciales de la prueba, Cavorting quedó de colera del grupo cuando llegaron a la curva pero eso no duraría demasiado. Yendo más abierta que cualquiera otra en la carrera, no pasó mucho antes de que ella emparejara a las punteras antes de pasarlas de largo en la recta. Con Florent Geroux a bordo por vez primera, ella ganó en un tiempo de 1:40.14 por 2 ½ cuerpos.

2016 OGDEN PHIPPS

La victoria en el Ogden Phipps mejoró su máxima Figura Equibase hasta un 110, siete puntos detrás de la figura de Penwith, la líder en figuras de velocidad para yeguas mayores en la arena.

La buena nueva acerca de Cavorting es que aunque ella se ha situado en una situación sabiamente expectante en sus carreras, ella también puede acomodarse cerca a los punteros, de modo que no está sujeta a los problemas de un neto atropellador que necesita de un desarrollo adecuado, ni a los de un puntero que no es capaz de sostener su velocidad.

Todavía ella no ha corrido sobre la distancia de 1 1/8 de milla, que es la distancia del Distaff, pero su carrera en el Phipps no ha dado alguna señal indicativa que no pueda conseguir respirar ese medio furlón extra que necesitará para la carrera.

Pedigrí

El pedigrí de Cavorting es una mezcla de velocidad y resistencia, lo cual explica el porqué ella ha sido capaz de extender su éxito de velocista a su éxito en mayor distancia.

La 4-años-de edad es por Bernardini, quien ha padrillado a ganadores del Travers y del Woodward, entre otros. Bernardini también llegó a ganar hasta 1 ¼ millas, siendo segundo en la Breeders’ Cup Classic de manera que es obvio que tenía resistencia suficiente. Su padre, A.P. Indy, fue el ganador del Belmont Stakes de 1992 y de la Breeders’ Cup Classic, así que la stamina no debería en realidad ser ningún inconveniente por este lado.

Cavorting es hija de la ganadora de Grado 2, Promenade Girl, quien fue tercera en  el Ogden Phipps del 2007. Al igual que su hija, Promenade Girl fue peligrosa tanto en la velocidad como en mayor distancia, desde los seis furlones hasta la 1 1/8 millas, teniendo una victoria en clásico de grado sobre 1 1/16 millas.

Promenade Girl es también la madre del ganador de dos años de edad, Thirstforlife, quien tuvo figuración clásica en su primera carrera después de salir caminando del partidor. Thirstforlife salió de perdedor exactamente siete días antes de que su media hermana ganase el Ogden Phipps y da la impresión de que él podría darle a su madre un segundo representante en las Breeders’ Cup si continúa haciéndolo como hasta ahora.

Promenade Girl es por Carson City, quien es reconocido como un padrillo de velocistas por lo cual tiene sentido de que su hija y sus nietos sean exitosos velocistas. Pero su madre, Promenade Colony brinda más de la stamina apreciada en sus victorias.

Promenade Colony ganó su única carrera sobre la milla y es hija de Pleasant Colony, semental ganador del Kentucky Derby y del Preakness, quien también fue tercero en el Belmont. Promenade Colony tiene dos hijas ganadoras clásicas, con dos ganadores clásicos viniendo de esas hijas. La tercera madre de Cavorting, Dance Review, por sí misma fue ganadora de nueve clásicos en su haber, siendo algunos de ellos en distancias largas.

Aunque es aún demasiado temprano para decir qué clase de desarrollo encontrará Cavorting corriendo en la Breeders’ Cup Distaff, la potranca ha dado saltos contundentes con sus últimas dos carreras, hasta convencer a sus conexiones que ella lo hará bien en la distancia.

McLaughlin no ha dicho cuál será el siguiente objetivo para la hija de Bernardini, pero dijo a la NYRA que el correr dos curvas en Saratoga está en su radar.
