With the turn of the calendar year approaching, the crew at America's Best Racing took a look back at our favorite moments from 2016.

Heartwarming Return of Rajiv Maragh

There is no doubt that Lady Eli’s return from life-threatening laminitis was the single moment highlight of the season, and Tepin’s win at Royal Ascot is what horse racing is all about. Personally, though, it was most gratifying to see jockey Rajiv Maragh return to riding in November for the first time since a horrific spill on July 10, 2015, that led to multiple fractures to his back and ribs as well as a collapsed lung.

Maragh picked up his first win since the comeback on Nov. 23 and won four races on Dec. 10. Thoroughbred Racing Commentary published a very nice feature on his injury, rehabilitation and comeback. –Mike Curry

Beholder Edges Songbird in a Distaff for the Ages

The Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff was the outstanding moment of 2016 for me. The race was billed as a showdown between the undefeated 3-year-old sensation, Songbird, versus the grand dame of the track, Beholder. And, man, did the Distaff deliver on that hype: all the way down the stretch, the two horses battled eyeball to eyeball with Beholder eking out the victory by the barest of noses. It was an incredible race between two valiant Thoroughbreds and a memory I’ll cherish for a long time to come. – Penelope Miller

Lady Eli's Victory Over Laminitis

Lady Eli was nothing short of spectacular for the first six races of her career, winning all of them with apparent ease. After tallying her second career Grade 1 win in the Belmont Oaks in 2015, she suffered a devastating blow, stepping on a nail and contracting laminitis that nearly took her life. The patience and care exhibited by the team of trainer Chad Brown was inspiring, and when she made it back to the races at Saratoga this summer it was a victory in itself.

Though Lady Eli finished a resolute second in the Woodford Reserve Ballston Spa Stakes that day, it was hard to be disappointed after witnessing her tenacity along the road to recovery and on the racetrack. I’ve enjoyed seeing her win since and look forward to her 2017 campaign. –Christina Moore

Stephen Foster Card at Churchill Downs

There were certainly many memorable moments in horse racing throughout the year, from California Chrome’s takedown of the Dubai World Cup to one of the most thrilling Breeders’ Cup races of all time in Beholder’s Longines Distaff. But I watched those on TV, and for me, the live experience of horse racing – taking in the total racetrack milieu – is what makes the sport so intoxicating.

My live racing attendance in 2016 was limited to the Kentucky circuit, and not many days at that. But the Stephen Foster Stakes card on June 18 at Churchill Downs was an enjoyable evening at the track, typical of the kind of event Churchill has been very good at producing ever since they unveiled night racing back in the late 2000s. Five stakes races, competitive fields for the most part, cooperative weather and a good, lively crowd – when those all come together, the sport of kings can’t be beat.

Of the horses running that June evening, the clear standout was Gun Runner, coming off of his strong third in the Kentucky Derby. He romped in the Matt Winn Stakes as the sun began to set, and would go on in subsequent months to place in the Travers Stakes, Pennsylvania Derby and Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile before coming back to Churchill in November and getting his Grade 1 win in the Clark Handicap.–Patrick Reed

Reconfortante Retorno de Rajiv Maragh

No hay duda que el retorno de Lady Eli de la amenaza mortal de la laminitis fue el momento estelar a resaltar de la temporada, y que el triunfo de Tepin en el Royal Ascot es de aquello de lo que se tratan las carreras de caballos. Personalmente, sin embargo, fue más gratificante ver al jinete Rajiv Maragh volver a montar en Noviembre por primera vez desde su horrible rodada del 10 de Julio del 2015, que condujo a múltiples fracturas en sus caderas así como a un colapso pulmonar.

Maragh consiguió su primer triunfo desde su retorno el 23 de Noviembre y ganó cuatro carreras el 10 de Diciembre. Thoroughbred Racing Commentary dio a publicidad un muy bonito artículo acerca de su lesión, rehabilitación y retorno. –Mike Curry

Beholder Superó a Songbird en una Distaff para el Recuerdo

La Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff fue el momento sobresaliente para mí del 2016. La carrera fue anunciada como  la confrontación decisiva entre la imbatible sensación de los 3 años de edad, Songbird, versus la gran dama de la pista, Beholder. Y, mi amigo, la Distaff lo entregó con ese nivel de excitación: todo el tramo final de la recta, los dos ejemplares batallaron cabeza a cabeza con Beholder ganando a duras penas la victoria por la pequeñez de una nariz. Fue una carrera increíble entre dos valiosas Purasangres y un recuerdo que apreciaré por un largo tiempo venidero. –Penélope Miller

La Victoria de Lady Eli sobre la Laminitis

Lady Eli no fue otra cosa que espectacular en las primeras seis carreras de su campaña, ganando todas ellas con aparente facilidad. Después de sumar su segundo Grado 1 en su campaña ganando la Belmont Oaks en 2015, ella sufrió un devastador traspié, pisando un clavo y contrayendo una laminitis que casi le costó la vida. La paciencia y el cuidado exhibido por el equipo del entrenador Chad Brown fueron inspiradores, y cuando ella volvió a las pistas este verano en Saratoga fue todo un triunfo en sí mismo.

El Programa del Stephen Foster en Churchill Downs

Hubieron ciertamente muchos momentos memorables en las carreras de caballos a través del año, desde el triunfo de California Chrome para llevarse la Dubai World Cup hasta una de las más excitantes carrera en las Breeders’ Cup de todos los tiempos, con la Longines Distaff de Beholder. Pero yo vi esas carreras en la TV, y para mí, la experiencia en vivo de las carreras de caballos – llevada a cabo en el ambiente total de la pista de carreras – es lo que hace de este deporte algo tan adictivo.

Mi asistencia a las carreras en vivo en el 2016 estuvo limitada al circuito de Kentucky, y no fueron muchos los días. Pero el programa del Stephen Foster Stakes el 18 de Junio en Churchill Downs fue el de una noche agradable en el hipódromo, típico de la clase de evento que Churchill ha sido capaz de producir desde que ellos volvieron a las carreras nocturnas allá por finales de los 2000. Cinco carreras clásicas, lotes competitivos la mayoría de las veces, un clima muy cooperativo y una buena y vivaz asistencia de gente – cuando todo eso se da junto, el deporte de los reyes no puede ser vencido.

De los caballos que corrieron ese esa noche de Junio, el que sobresalió con claridad fue Gun Runner, viniendo de ser tercero en el Kentucky Derby. Jugó con sus rivales en el Matt Winn Stakes mientras el sol comenzaba a ponerse, y en los meses posteriores iría a figurar en el Travers Stakes, Pennsylvania Derby y Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile antes de regresar a Churchill en Noviembre y conseguir su triunfo de Grado 1 en el Clark Handicap. – Patrick Reed
